Colorado Unit 24 Elk Hunt

Postby Hunter2749 » 07 05, 2017 •  [Post 1]

I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping I can get some solid information on Colorado's Unit 24, near Camel's Peak. I'm new to elk hunting but familiar with what it will take to have a successful hunt, especially on public land. I'm willing to go the distance, literally, to get the job done. I'll be camping with 3 other gentlemen. Only one has taken an elk but I don't believe it was in Colorado so this will be a first for most of us. My firearm of choice will be a Browning 7mm Mag with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9x40 scope. I'm looking for any information on Unit 24, specifically during the second rifle season (Oct. 21-29). What are the pros and cons to the unit? What's the weather typically like towards the end of October? More importantly how's the elk population in this unit? I'm open to any and all advice.

I know nothing about Colorado but you might add how much hunting experience your fellow hunters have and if any of them have hunted in the unit...welcome to the forum

I'm not familiar with 24,but hunted 25 a lot. Expect a lot of hunter pressure.Find the nastiest, thickest roughest country and hunt that. If they haven't gone to private land, that is where they will be

That makes sense. I've read somewhere that most shots come within 100 yards and if they're bedded down in all the thick stuff it sounds like it's true. Thank you for your feedback.

I'd take either and but if you can find a nice 7x7 I'll buy you a case of beer.

Area 24 during the second season can be very cold and have heavy snow. When the snows come the elk move down and into 12 and 231. I hunted that area around ten years ago and found it very crowded during the second season. We had Cow tags for 12 and 24 so we packed up and tried 12. We liked it so much we went to town and bought a Bull tag OTC and hunted third season as well. While there I met an outfitter and started using them. Then switched back to DIY around four years ago. We hunted around Burro Mountain and loved the area. But it was crowded. As Saddlesore said, look for the hardest area you can find to get into and slowly hunt that area. Use your glasses more than your feet and good luck.
