Elk Hunt Videos

Who is putting out the best elk hunting, for entertainment primarily, these days. I know this is a matter of opinion, but I got tired of ten or more kills per hour on the Primos Truth Series videos. There was little more than a quick setup and kill on them. I used to enjoy Stoney Wolf, but don's see them any more and Wilderness Sound had some great stories. Larry Jones even went home without a bull on some hunts and Dwight Schuh got skunked at times too, but the stories were great.

Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg is far and away the best in my opinion. It is all do-it-yourself public land hunting. He shows the good and the bad. Fantastic show and a great ambassador of hunting as well.

Long ago I was a big Primos fan... still love the old videos, but stopped watching a few years back,
Now I watch YouTube self made elk hunts... stuck n the rut takes the cake for me!!! Just guys that love hunting!

I second the YouTube recommendation. I search for DIY hunting and view videos that just as easily could have been me. I know there are plenty of tree stand hunting vieos available as well.

That is actually how I watch Fresh Tracks with Randy Newberg now...all on Youtube. Some of his earlier stuff is under On Your Own Adventures. I just watched him on an Alaskan Moose hunt where they have boat motor trouble....it was pretty funny (not to him, but to the audience). All of his hunts are hunts you or I could do...no exotic locations or licenses or costs. He hunts elk more than anything but also Muleys, WTs, Pronghorn, bear, and moose to name a few. Archery and rifle.

One of his best episodes is the one and only time he has lost a wounded animal. He was bear hunting and what he went through physically and emotionally trying to find that bear is not something that is often shown on TV.

I get so sick of the fake personalities and the canned hunts on TV. I wont even watch them anymore other than Fresh Tracks. Meat Eater is entertaining too, but I never seem to watch it as I don't watch a lot of TV.

I have been a fan of Western Hunter. Nate Simmons and the older host are both good and share the heart of the hunt and both like to do back country public land hunting. So it is not special tag, guided hunt stuff. Nate has also done some great videos on youtube and others, one set covered gutless method on elk very well.

I am biased but you can't beat the stuff by Rogue Wild in my opinion. Certainly you can't find better people than those guys. Super nice guys...the kind that would give you a hand no matter what. I think they are again in the Full Draw film tour again this year. My favortie elk hunts are the Caribull and their Utah elk hunt stories. Phenomenal stories and these guys are incredible hunters that show the highs and lows....not just killing.

Born and Raised Outdoors and Randy Newburg - in no particular order. They are far and away the best for DIY guys.

Primos is like watching a fairy tale if you are a DIY OTC elk hunter. Hunting large private ranches... They may be exciting, but not realistic for how 90% of us hunt.

ZMA crew make some really good elk videos, they are my favorite, I like the born and raised videos too, but the ZMA is worth checking out

On youtube I like Clay Hayes from Twisted Stave media, he is from Idaho. I also like more of the documentary on Dave Peterson, The Good Hunt.

I just binged on the Rogue Wild flicks. Those are great. Guys like that are excellent representatives on what the sport of elk hunting is all about. Thanks for turning me onto them

Absolutely. Like I was saying they are ridiculously nice guys....and completely genuine. The thing that amazed me the most is how willing to help Matt is. I haven't met his brother but Matt has a super contagious personality and is very up beat. Matt is one of thoooose guys...he can catch salmon/steelhead out of a mud puddle and get on to elk in a Walmart parking lot. He has killed a number of dandy bulls.

Love Randy Newberg, meat eater is good as well I like watching his for how he cooks his food and stuff. I'm an outfitter so some of those things I'd like to try with clients and see what they think. I like watching any show that is about the hunt, that shows the highs and lows. I had an experience this year with a first time elk hunter, he hunted in my home unit for 9 days, he was filming a show and his camera guy had to leave in an emergency on day 3, he went with a local over there and for his final day, the buddy he was staying with sent him to us.
I met the guy at 4am the morning of the hunt, it's always hard stepping in with a client like that, but we made it work. I ended up being his camera man, and we were 20 minutes behind the elk in the morning. I knew our lower wallow had elk in it the night before so that was our go to that evening. We harvested a nice bull, on camera where him and his cow wallowed in front of us for 30 minutes. The best part was when we walked up on that bull how my hunter Craig Meyer's reaction was. All day I seen his maps on where he was in my old unit, the miles he put on, and just how it all came together right then was amazing. The reason I am an outfitter is for those moments with clients. Seeing that first hand from behind a camera gives you a whole new look on tv shows. How much is taken out for that shot and recovery, vs what all really happened. The problem is with this tape if we wanted to show the whole story for his whole hunt, plus what happened in front of us it would need to be a hour special.
I feel Randy Newberg is really good at showing his whole Hunts, not just the high points but all of it and that's why he is my favorite. The guys that show us they hunt like the average Joe's are the best, the 5 kills in 30 minutes just doesn't do it for me.

That is exactly what I want in a hunt video too. I really don't care just to see another trophy bull on the ground. There has to be a story with a lot of drama along with it to be of any real interest to me. I too have watched some of the Wild Rogue films and they are excellent. I have never met any of the hunters, but they know how to hunt and film a good story. I liked Gypsumreaper's video here on W.T. It gave us quite a bit to discuss and it was a real hunt, with a nearly unreal ending.

I'm not much for hunting videos or guys that try to profit by making and selling them. The Primos bunch pretty much ruined that with their huggy/smoochie stuff after the kill. I did like some of the old Larry D Jones stuff. He always said a prayer over the animal to show respect and thanks for it.

I'm fine with guys making profit on hunting videos. I guess the way I look at it is anyone that can make a living hunting, more power to them. I don't care if it's videos, outfitters, horns, etc... I definitely agree with the "average joe" comment. I do prefer watching the ones on YouTube that just show there hunt and what they go through. High Country Films has some good hunts too.

Eric Chester has a good video on what he calls the "Fire Bull". Shots are long but it shows the ups and downs from scouting before the season all the way through the hunt. He has many other quality videos as well. One where he deals with a landowner trying to kick him off of BLM land. He is part of the Hushin crew.
