Here in PA we have "Elk Season" and you can use rifle, bow, muzzleloader, flintlock, etc., but in Colorado they have different seasons for each. If you hunt archery in CO. and don't harvest an elk, is that tag good for muzzleloader or rifle season later? If your from another state with a different type of system please let us know on here also. Thank you in advance.

The short answer is no you cannot use an archery tag during rifle season but if you will click this link and view page 16 of the brochure it will provide a chart with the breakdown of legal methods during each season. Your tag list the dates that you are permitted to hunt. Once that date has expired your season is over. There are opportunities to hunt both archery and rifle seasons but those require two seperate tags.

Depends on your tag in Wyoming. For example, a Type 9 tag is archery only.

Again, depending on the area, you can hunt both archery and rifle, provided you purchase the archery license along with your tag. The 2016 regulations are still available on the WY Game & Fish website. Archery instructions and dates are included in section 3.

Some states, the tag is for an Elk - no method of take specified, Other states, it is for a specific season and method of take.

Nebraska your tag is good for one Bull Elk, any method of take. Archery hunters get a 1 week head start, otherwise, it is any method and the season is peak rut. Success rates are over 80% as Elk hunting in Nebraska is not a mature endeavor yet and tags severely limited. Will take 20 years for the Game and Parks and the Landowners to figure out the market and how to maximize revenues.

In Colorado, the tag is for one season,one method of take. You don't fill it in that season you are done.Even though there are four different elk center fire rifle seasons in Colorado,you must choose one.

The exceptions are. There are "A" tags and "B" tags. You can have one "A" tag and one "B" tag or two "B" tags.

Crop damage hunts, Raffle hunts,Auction tags, Tips Reward Tags, Youth or Mobility Impairded Ranching for Wildlife tags,Youth Out Reach, and tags that are replacement tags for positive tested CWD animals tags are "C" tags and you can buy as many of those as you want.

Also included in"C: tags are any OTC either sex tags for Plain units and a few special private landowner tags and three separate units listed on page 33 in the bg game brochure

I believe if you get one of the lottery tags, or buy a specially Governors tag for many thousands of dollars, you can hunt with any weapon legal to shoot an elk with.

That's one reason I never even considered hunting Colorado way back in the beginning. The General licenses in both Montana and Wyoming are good for a month to 6 weeks of archery and gun season. Gun season in Montana is 5 weeks and in Wyoming it's anywhere from 2 weeks to a month.

What type of hunter quantities are there in WY and MT. Colorado went to four different elk seasons because of all the hunters. Had to separate them some way. Years ago there was only one season, then two ,,. There was also a Sportsman tag where one license bought you all species of Big Game, At the time I think it was $45 or so.

Not defending ,but Colorado gets all the hunters when they didn't draw in other states. If there are about 280,000 elk in Colorado and the kill ratio is about an average of 20%, that means there are a heck of a lot of hunters in CO.

I hunt two elk seasons every year for $92 in tags and that is 18 days hunting, Usually about 25 days in the filed.Add deer and antelope and I'm tired of hunting by the end of December.

One year,me and a bud wanted to hunt Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico all in the same year. Tags were going to be over $3000 so we gave that up

if you get one of the premium or governor tags, that is an additional elk, you can still hunt general and kill 2 if you played your cards right...or get a leftover tag, also additional elk.....I don't have to worry about any of that, i'm not lucky enough to draw or win anything I also don't need 2 elk in a year. I still like it here, as long as I can elk hunt every year, i'm happy

I'm the same.I don't need to kill another elk in my life time,but I go for two seasons because I like to chase the critters and be out there. I probably have about three years supply of meat in my freezer

Wow, one "elk season" in PA. How simple! UT is a bit more complex.

Here is an overview from the top of my head. Might be a couple mistakes in there.

You can obtain up to 3 elk tags in a year. Only one can be antlered tag. A second tag for an antlerless can be picked up in the antlerless draw. Finally, for a handful of units over objective, an OTC cow tag can be obtained to be used in conjunction with the season for which you have a bull or buck tag.

There are also many Cooperative Wildlife Management Unit (private land) hunts as well, with various dates. A portion of the permits are available to the public via the draw, while the remainder are sold by the CWMU.

Last year my stew had three tags in it. That started to get rather bitter. Not sure more is better in this case.

Saddlesore.... Montana gets the same thing.... all the hunters that didn't draw in other states. I'm not exactly sure how many hunters there are but the licenses have 100% draw odds. Not technically OTC but everyone who applies gets a license. I think most unsuccessful Wyoming applicants run straight for Montana. But they still don't have as many hunters as Colorado. I don't think Montana and Wyoming combined have as many as Colorado. A huge % of my clients interested in hunt plans are ones who have invested time in CO and are looking to escape the rat race. They ask questions like "How many miles do I have to pack in to get beyond the masses" When I say zero camp at the truck they have a hard time believing that. No muzzleloader season either. The older hunters like the lower elevations as well. I can't imagine trying to get acclimated to 11 or 12K in a week. I've never hunted that high.
