Howdy from Central Oregon

New member here and just wanted to say hi.....and get my 3 posts out of the way so I can PM. I'm a new bow hunter from central oregon whom got elk fever my second year into elk hunting. Since I got the bug I've tried to digest as much elk info as possible. I quickly started to realize that bow hunting is the most effective strategy and being an Oregon resident it gives me the best opportunities. My family never hunted so I'm learning on my own and was also motivated to start bow hunting so that I can pass the knowledge down to my son (3 years old) when he gets older and hope to increase his hunting opportunity.

Being a biologist, I'm mostly interested in what makes an elk tick (why they do what they do). All my research has slowly funneled me to this forum and elk nuts info. I've been debating weather or not to purchase a 3 month membership to Roe Hunting Resources due to his biologist background, but I've been holding off until I look through elk nuts stuff first. Anyway......howdy and I hope to interact with folks

It is good to have you in the W.T. camp Redmond. You are right about having being a lot of good information out there. There is some that is not so good too, but we try to make sure that the things posted here are generally good. There is a lot of opinion and some differences due to variations in hunting locations. We all have gaps in our understanding of elk, but if we post something that is questionable, someone will politely speak up and suggest that is not right. I say politely as we are trying to help one another rather than show off by putting someone else down. It is a win/win situation.

I live in Oregon too and hunt central Oregon. I hunt closer to John Day than Redmond. I am retired Forest Service ending my career out of John Day.

I am going to copy your greetings onto the elk forum. We have other Oregon people here and some either live near you or hunt central Oregon. More folks will get to know you on the elk forum than here.

Ive called 2 bulls to one buddy there in the Strawberries many years ago. My buddy loves that spot. I think it's just average

My take on the elk stuff out there now. I like the ElkNut stuff. I like the Chris Roe stuff too it's very well organized and has video and a lot of explanation to go along with it- excellent. I haven't seen Corey Jacobson's elk 101 but I'm sure that is pretty good too.

I wish they had some of those programs 30 years ago when I started. It would've saved me many years of trial and error.

sounds like we have had similar paths in hunting, I too am from a non hunting family. I have found it to not be a crutch in any way, I almost think I benefit from that, I had a dry first 4 years...lots of chances and encounters, but didn't know how to capitalize, and didn't realize how important shooting a bunch was. this coming season will be season 18 for me, and I am more excited about it than every other season....the beauty of the hunt, you don't get burnt out, just more excited, more motivated to apply your newest knowledge from the previous year, and all other info you have acquired.

welcome, look forward to hearing some more Oregon hunting stories. I have never hunted over there, I don't like driving east of the coast range, and stick close to home hunting. central and eastern Oregon are beautiful, and by far the most friendly group of oregonians live east of the cascades....pretty country and good folks over there. I have family east of Burns, go there a few times a year....looking for a weekend to head over soon, my brother in law keeps texting me about how thick the sage rats are already that is some fun archery practice...and burn through lots of 17hmr rounds.
