Help increase my FOC

Postby ORelksniper » 03 09, 2017 •  [Post 1]

I'm shooting Easton ST Epic N Fused 340 spine at 29" length. Using 100 grain Slick Tricks. Total arrow weight ready to hunt is 432gr with an FOC of only 9.9%. Bow is set at 63lb. I would like to increase the FOC to at least 11 or 12%. I have lots of these arrows and lots of the ST 100 gr heads. Don't want to buy any new arrows or broadheads. Question: is there a reasonable cost effective way to increase the FOC on my current setup?

Thanks for your suggestions.

Not familiar with these arrows. Are they a microdiameter shaft? You can remove the nock, take an appropriate sized HIT insert and push it down from the back of the shaft onto the current insert. If you use gorilla glue it doetsn't set fast so have plenty of working time.

What is causing you to want to up your FOC?

I'm trying to do the same right now, When i shoot in a cross wind i get a pretty good tail kick out of the arrow and sometimes the arrow isn't hitting the target square. This leads to poor penetration obviously. I've checked everything out on my bow for being tuned and the only other idea i can conjure up is that i need more FOC.

Id plan on switching arrows all together though. I'm shooting Easton 340 FMJ arrows with 100grain tips and im right at 8-10% FOC depending on which method is used to calculate. I'd like to come close to doubling that but still maintain my same arrow weight of right at 468 grains, or at least real close to that weight as i really like my arrow trajectory right now out to 90yds.

I'm trying to find an arrow that is less GPI and use 125grain points to achieve this. Still a work in progress.

This proposed solution does not agree with what I have observed. When the front of something is disproportionately heavier than the rear, the rear gets loose easier. In your case the mechanism (fletch) that controls the arrow is at the back of the arrows. That part of your arrow will be disproportionately liter. How could keeping the fletched part of an arrow lite and weighing down the front help stabilize the rear of the arrow? It will be even more unstable.
If you made your whole arrow heavier it would be less susceptible to the wind, but the fletch would lose its ability to control the added weight. You could get to a point where you need more fletch. I am sorry to say, but I think you are fighting a losing battle. :(

I think I see that there are offerings out there for 75gr HP inserts. If you have some arrows without inserts glued in, that may be your best option for increasing FOC without changing broadheads to a higher weight. Albeit more expensive, the easiest option is to change field points and broadheads.

I agree with Swede that higher foc is only going to make the tail easier for wind to push. Mass and spin will resist yaw. Reduced fletching will also reduce the wind's effect.

interesting take guys, thanks for the insight. My arrows are already 468 grains. That should be heavy enough I'd think. Im using blazer vanes with helical. I get great arrow flight without a crosswind. What's my answer?

EDIT: I do fall right on the cut off between a 340 spline and a 300 spine. Would a stiffer arrow help me out?

Generally I would rather be a little over on spine than weak. If your arrows fly well when there is no wind, I would be inclined to leave them alone. Experimenting can be fun, but once you change one thing, other changes are necessary. After awhile it gets tiring and expensive.

They fly like they should without a cross wind. But put a 20mph cross wind on them and they fishtail like crazy. Thats why i was leaning towards FOC being the issue.

I completely see what you are saying about making the tail way less and the wind affecting it more.

I looked at it the opposite though, if you put more weight up front, the tail wouldn't be able to wag to dog sort of speak. I've no idea which is the correct statement though...

Timeon, just look at it this way. The wind blows on the whole arrow. The wind is constant across a broad area. The back part has the vanes and the most area to catch the wind. The back end is also lighter. Which end of the arrow will the wind effect the most? The smaller front end or the much larger and light rear?
As a footnote on this; I am reminded that when I shoot from along side my house into the open space, I see my arrow fish tail when it gets into the open wind. When it is protected by the house it flies perfectly.
Timeon if you find a cure for the wind, please let us know. I think where will be a lot of interest. :D
