Cot Recommendations

Finally got the wall tent and now I am looking to outfit it. Does anyone have a recommendation for a cot that is a great bang for the buck? I'll be mainly setting up camp at a trailhead/ camping next to the car so weight isn't a big issue. I have seen lots of people recommend a pad on top of the cot - is hauling around the extra pad worth it? Any insight or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

The best cot I have used and still prefer is my surplus army one. It has a wood frame and came with no bag, but is better by far than the one I still have from Cabelas with an aluminum frame.

Got this a few years ago and "really" like it for base camping (Slumberjack Big Lux Cot). Plenty long, plenty wide. Throw a nice mattress on top of it and you may sleep through the first call alarm clock

The Cabelas Outfitter XL cot is outstanding and looks similar to RJ's. To answer your question about the cot pad: if you don't want to spend the money, don't try laying on one! Adding that cot and pad has made such a huge difference in the quality of sleep I get at night. Having a large cot like that certainly makes a difference, but the pad is definitely worth the money.

I never had a cot that I slept well in.They were either too saggy or cold from underneath.
Here is what I did. I bought a single bed frame from Goodwill for $30. I cut oak slats for it and put a piece of 1/2" OSB on top cut to size.I then put a pad down and put an air bed on it with my sleeping bag on that.

That feels like my bed at home.Warm and no sore back.

Two things you must do.Put a heavy pad or blanket between you and the air bed to soak up any body moisture and turn your sleeping bag back in the morning to dry that moisture out

Yes a pad is worth it. mine went to h$ll last year I didn't sleep very well. I have a XL cot from Cabelas with a pad the only thing I wish I would have done different was buy bunks, we have a lot of people staying in are camp and bunks save a lot of room in are wall tent.

This year for my pad I'm buying a 8" queen memory foam for $200 cutting it in half and splitting the cost. I well let you know how it works. The air valves are nice but mine got a hole in it last year, and there expensive for a good one.

I have 2 of the dang things...and am buying a 3rd.

i have an old compact/light Cabelas version.....and a big tall [heavy] one...I think its an "Alps" and its good...but bulky and very heavy.

We pack in a lot on horses so I need light and compact so i think I'm going to buy one of the Roll-a-Cots this year. My Montana buddy has them....pretty slick

A pad isn't an option it's a MUST! Just like getting elk quarters off of the ground so air can flow underneath to cool them the same thing happens to you in a cot. You'll freeze without one. Anything will do to eliminate that factor but you might want to think about the comfort factor too. A good pad is priceless. I prefer inflatable over foam.

I'm w Joe. I use an old Wenzel self-inflating pad, w 2" insulation. Inflated it goes to 3", very warm and comfortable. Downsides: bulky, heavy. I have a Klymit Static V for backpacking.

I was in Sams Club down in Junction this afternoon. They had the Klymit Static V for $39 bucks. But it wasn't the insulated version.

I love this one. Warmest cot I have ever owned. No pad needed.

Yep, I've used one for years and years until just last year when I finally sprang for the oversized Slumberjack cot. Nothing wrong at all with the military cots. Throw a good pad on them and they work like a charm.
