snowy days / indoor hobbies

Postby wawhitey » 02 05, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Well, the woods are so deep in snow now that even going out coyote hunting, shed hunting, checking cams etc seems like more trouble than its worth. What to do indoors mid winter? Im thinking about buying a lathe / dremmel etc and trying my hand at making predator calls. Any other ideas for a winter time hobby? What do you do to pass the time until melt off?

I just bought a sand blaster cabinet and started cleaning up my older tools. I'm also in the process of rebuilding the winch on my M37 truck which requires lots of crud removal. Eventually I'll pickup a metal mill and lathe and start making parts as needed.

I spend most my winter free time doing load development/reloading, run a small trapline and coyote hunting. I occasionally ice fish as well. also, putting gear away from the previous fall. Between clothing and gear, that normally takes a month or two

I'm a fly fisherman, so building fly rods, tying flies, organizing gear are hobbies to me. You could buy a sewing machine and some silnylon. Make ultralight stuff sacks, an ultralight tarp tent, etc?

I do all the stuff that I havent been doing since August

This year my wife got on a minimalist kick. Someone at work retired at 54 years old and is doing all the things they want too.
She use to be a spender,.. great with the books,.. she knew every penny we spent. She has gotten to the point she sees no purpose in all the stuff we accumulated over the years, mostly crap keeping up with the Jones stuff Ive hauled a pick up load of stuff to Deseret Industries, a donation center.
She claims she wants to travel and has filled this summer vacation time.
The house is getting organized. Were hoping to sell with all three daughters out and build a smaller house1100.Sq feet

cleaning and getting rid and fixing stuff,.. dang the bath tub faucet is leaking,.and broke a waterline to the horse trough.
I plan to make the original master bedroom into my reloading room for a while. Im out of 7mm shells,.. and have a few thousand 12 ga empties.

I like to make a knife once in awhile. But my latest project is trying to figure out how to put a medium ALICE pack on a Molle II frame. I think it will make a good pack as well as a great meat hauler once I get it set up like I want it. I'm trying to make it expandable so I can place elk quarters between the pack and the frame.

I've been getting more into building my arrows and fletching myself, tuning, etc. Thinking about building a hidden handgun shelf though.

Getting rid of excess gear is my hobby right now!

But, bought a press / drawboard so I can do all my own bow setup and tuning. Have a fletching jig so I can fletch my own arrows. Have acquired some reloading gear so I can start doing a little more rifle / pistol reloading and shooting to go with it... I have a bunch of other non-hunting / fishing hobbies (Skiing, Car Work, House Projects), but those are the related ones...

Twice..... got it restuck twice and decided that was enough for today. Ill try again tomorrow. :x

That blows. Over in my neck of WA, we got around 10-12 inches and the entire county went into a panic. Rigs in the ditch everywhere, chaos ensued, women and children screaming, zombie's running amuck
