The big brown truck brought the Darton Archery Maverick II today. Woo hoo! I've decided to set her all up by myself and see how I do. Accessories include a Trophy Taker something or other pro drop away rest (I liked the TT on my Alpine so got another one), MBG 5 pin site, Easton buckhorn stab, a pretty cool looking red bow sling, Darton Archery 4 arrow quiver (seems a bit heavy but will give it a shot), a larger than life peep (1/4), a handful of D loop material (red), some serving string (still on its way from where I ordered it from), and an inexpensive bow vise with a bunch of cool little leveling gadgets . I've never tied in a D loop or installed a drop away rest so those will be my biggest challenges I think.

Gotta start somewhere so I set up/mounted the bow vise on my shop bench, put in the draw modules (it seems Darton ships their bows with shipping draw modules), took the poundage down so I could draw the bow back (remember, I have the arthritis thing going on), did an initial mount of the TT rest, and put on the stabilizer and bow sling. Figured I'd stop there and head back in the house to help Mrs. Phantom with dinner.

Sweet! I'm debating on getting a new bow. Curious what you have to say about setting it up and getting it tuned. Closest bow shop to me is about an hour and a half away. So begin able to work on my own bow would be nice its just intimidating.

Yeah I will be following your exploits closely. I have a bow vice and some of the tools already but not had the guts to do everything myself. Might make sense buy a ":backup" bow and experiment with it.. least that is the excuse I will use...

My local bow shop messed up my bow numerous times, 2 years ago i took matters into my own hands and began to learn the ins and outs of tuning my bow. I passed on the vice, but got a press instead. thats all a guy really needs besides some allen wrenches and a couple pairs of pliers.

I'll be more than willing to help anyone learn to serve in a peep or drop away, or tie on a d-loop. Both are very simple. Youtube is your friend!

Ya, figured it was time I learned how to do a few more things on a bow. Ha, glad you caught the movie reference. I couldn't figure out a way to use "I can eat 50 eggs" so used another (altered a bit to suit my needs) quote from the movie instead

In the low/mid 50s I think (haven't put it on a scale yet). It's a 50-60 lb bow. Working every day to try and build up bow muscles but this damn "A" or whatever the hell I have is, is kicking my butt.

Hope that works for you. I first noticed my problem a couple of years ago. I was shooting 63# just fine when I practiced standing. So I set up an antelope blind over a water hole. I had a nice buck come in and so help me, while I was setting in my chair, I couldn't even begin to pull the string back. It finally got so bad that this year I installed a DrawLoc on my bow and got a handicap permit to use it. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet as my target is buried under a 7 ft snow bank right now and there is no place to shoot inside around here. But I'll let you know how it all works out later on this spring when the snow goes off.

i'm gonna swap over to a left hand bow soon. i'll fly into tuscon to buy from a friend just so he can show me how to set it up.

i have the tools, i just need more knowledge and confidence. i can do most things, but changing cables/strings..yikes. makes me nervous.

Congrats on the new bow RJ. There are several of us here on the forum that are getting new bows. I guess it is an antidote for cabin fever. This winter seems long already and we are not half through it yet.
Pointysticks, I hope you can go to the PSE factory facility while in Tucson. I went to a couple of their schools back in the mid 90s. It is a great place, but can be expensive if you are not careful. Take your wife with you if you want to come home with most of your money.

Went to town, so to speak, on setting the Maverick II up today (took the day off from work). D Loop (third install, wanted to do this a few times), served in the TT drop away rest cord on down cable, installed rest and set initial elevation/windage arrow alignment, Darton quiver went on but crap (I have to get another quiver, the Darton does not hold the narrower Victory Archery RIP arrows well at all), installed the MBG Rush 5 pin site, and....... installed the 3/8" peep. Pics attached, I think I did pretty darn good for my first time doing some of this stuff . I actually shot the bow a handful of times in the shop at the Rhinhart target and I think this bow is gonna perform very well once I get her all tuned in! Thanks for looking. RJ

Update on the Darton (setting it up here boss) . Long story short, the Darton quiver I ordered doesn't hold the smaller diameter Victory Shafts tight enough, so, I adjusted fire and ordered a super cool Treelimb Quiver from Norm at Treelimb (if you guys haven't checked these things out, they're really nice quivers). Was actually able to get it in the same color as the new Darton Maverick (Typhoon Kryptek)! After putting all the parts on and getting what I thought was a good arrow center shot and rest height/nock height setting (D loop install), I commenced to check tune via paper today. After a handful of minor adjustments, I was able to get he 4 fletch shafts ripping pretty decent holes. Done for today but will head back out to the shop and finalize the paper tune, then, on to walk back tuning as soon as I get a day where it's not raining too bad here. Really liking the new Darton so far. Moving forward here boss

Thanks Duke. No groups yet, just finished paper tuning. Gonna do some walk back tuning on Saturday and maybe set the pins if the weather holds. Geez, I don't want to get rain or snow on the new bow
