270 Winchester

I am not wanting this to turn into a debate by no means. I am just curious as to how many people use a 270 win for elk/mule deer/ antelope. I know the round is capable of the task but also curious how far other hunters have taken these animals with that specific caliber. I'm aware of the other calibers out there I'm just focused on the 270 win at the moment. Thanks

1 mule deer shot at 50 yards. I know 50 yards isn't much, but I wouldn't hesitate to use the 270 at longer distances within reason.

i want a 270WSM. i think a 270 is a great round. i used to read all about Oconner blasting all his animals with one. and it's less "vanilla" than my 30-06

a few months ago, my friend put one thru a big mulie at 470 yards..that thing folded. i wouldnt hesitate on an elk.

Thanks for the reply gents. Pointysticks I'm right there with you on the reading. I love my 270 and wouldn't hesitate shooting it with the correct bullet choice. Mostly because I'm super confident in that rifle and it's a dream shooter. I'd love yup hear more thoughts. Keep them coming

I'm a firm believer in bullet selection and bullet placement. At the same time You are correct it's nice to have a shoulder cannon!

I use to shoot 120 particians for antelope, 140's for deer and 160's for elk out of my 7mm( I think we used 175 Winchester for two bull moose) I dont shoot enough now to keep track of three bullets.
One time up deer hunting in northern Mn with my dad I was walking into camp and saw a tree loaded with squirrels. I still dont know what kind of tree it was. . I fired my 308, missing the first squirrel, realizing it with my scope rise I just shot low. My next 6 shots I head shot 6 squirrels with my .308 with 220 gn Core-locs.

Walking into camp some southern boys offered two cleaned grouse for those squirrels,.. quick trade

I've shot a couple elk with a .270. both tipped right over using 150grain partitions. I'd not hesitate to use the 270 for elk.

I have shot several deer and elk with a 270W. The only caution I would have is to use a heavier bullet than the 130 gr. on elk. It can get the job done, but is a little light. I don't think you need to buy expensive rounds, but go with 140+ grains.

I've been shooting the 270 Win since a teenager, deer, elk and antelope have all fallen to it. I used to do the switch others mentioned (130 grain for antelope/deer, switched to 150 grain for elk, all Nosler Partitions). I've stopped doing that since there was no appreciable difference in the critters ending up dead. Now I use 130 grain Nosler Partitions on everything, they just get the job done. Bullet composition matters and there are many good options for the 270.
