The new Bow Debate

Seems alwasy a good one to bring up.

I have a bow that is 4 or 5 years old. Its a PSE Brute X (was the first bow I ever bought). Its not Matthews or Hoyt but does just fine for me I suppose. Feel like i shoot it well. i have shot thousands of arrows through my bow, i know that.

I have harvested several whitetail does and 2 whitetail bucks with this bow
have not yet harvested an elk. Had a shot at one but hit a tree.
So no real reason i should consider spending more money on a more expensive bow. But for some reason i am thinking about it. Why is that?

Somebody tell me I am crazy and just stick with my old trusty bow and just upgrade my string and broad heads/arrows this year and call it a day.

Ok... you are crazy stick with your old TRUSTY bow. Those things cost huge bucks once they are all setup and guess what.... an elks lungs don't know the difference. I shoot a Mathews Switchback and I might keep it forever. It's like an arm or leg that's been there forever.

I bought a Mathews because back then it was the lightest bow on the market and I have shoulder issues. I can draw just fine but holding something up with my arm extended can be tough. I ended up falling in love with that bow and never looked back.

Where are you hunting this year Luke?

If you have to upgrade, find out why and figure out what you want. Then save yourself a ton of money by buying a year or two old used bow.

I sold my old bow in 2013 that I had bought used (along with every other bow I had owned) and bought my first "new bow" the Creed because it was going to save me nearly 2 lbs over my old one. that made my decision. I'm still shooting the Creed and don't plan to change.

If it isn't broken... why don't you take the money you'd fork out on a new bow, invest it in some public (or private) stock that is higher risk/reward? If everything works out you can go on a special hunt from the interest in 10 years.

I'm for sticking with the older trusty bow.
I bought a switchback xt a few years ago had no intention of ever changing till I won a Mathews z7 in a raffle. Will probably stick with it till I win another one. Lol.

Glad you brought this up! I was shooting an older Hoyt (2011) and my shoulders just wouldn't let me hold for very long. On Whitetails, is was great but will be headed out West again and just wasn't feeling confident.

Picked up a new (used) model for 1/3 of the cost with newer technology that I have no problem holding. My older Hoyt became my back-up. Took the money I saved and put it in my sock drawer!

Your bow is five years old? Holy heck, you need a new one ASAP

. I do have a new bow ordered (just shipped yesterday from Darton Archery, woo hoo), but, I'm not getting a new bow because my current bow (Alpine Archery) doesn't work just fine and dandy. I'm getting the new bow just because I'm anxious to get back to my roots and pick up a new Darton (that's my excuse and I'm sticking with it). My Alpine is about six years old I think, but, the bow I had before that one was close to 15 years old. There are guys with 15+ rifles and pistols so I don't think having two bows (primary and backup, or, target and hunting) is too far out there

Do you NEED one? No of course not! Do you WANT one? Well - that's up to you

As mentioned above - used bows can be a steal if you know what you're looking for. A 2014 Hoyt Carbon Spyder can be had for $500 - $600 if you look around, where the new models of the same bow are $1400?

I suppose just like rifles, it is hard to come up with a reason not to buy a new one.That money you spend would pay for a rental horse next yea.r

I played the new bow game every year or two for a few years. Problem was i never really got settled into the new one before i switched. MY shooting suffered for sure.

I've been shooting a z7 ever since they came out and will be for awhile yet.

I really wish i just still have my switchback....might be the best bow mathews ever put out.

If i were in the market for a new bow, Elite would be given a very hard, long look.

this...i wish i still had two things..my old Switchback XT, and the thousands of dollars spent trying to find that same feeling of the SBXT. IDIOT!! i got a Z7 and unlike your's; mine was crap. it was strung up wrong from the factory and would shoot a broadhead arrow around a corner. i named that bow "drunken sparrow" it was the worst bow of my history..mathews owned up to it, and the VP called me and we talked for hours. i didnt get permission to hunt Mathews land as a big "im sorry"./ hahahah.

my current Elite is a very good bow, and almost as good as my SBXT. lessoned learned..i am done until i need a lefty bow.
