Neb elk Hunters

Postby Hot Cow » 01 11, 2017 •  [Post 1]

Hello all!
I am going to apply this year in my home state of Neb and have some ?'s for those of you who have been lucky enough to draw an elk tag in the state. If someone can help me out that would be great. The ?'s mostly deal with land owner access.
Thanks

I just got lucky and filled my once in a lifetime Nebraska Elk Tag this year.

I hunted the North Platte River Unit, and I live near the Box Elder Unit

Happy to answer any question you might have. No need to keep anything secret in Nebraska since you can only hunt once.

Nebraska is a great place to shoot a truly huge Elk, but I would have to describe the "hunt" as only OK since it is mostly private land, and getting to be harder and harder to find someone who will let you hunt for free. My hunt ended up costing about 1500.00 with license, guide fee, tresspass fees, and processing. And I was getting off on the cheap big time. I am a hard core DIY guy so I did not like to pay anything to hunt

I shot a beautiful younger 6x6, just under 300 inches with my Rifle. But I missed a giant at 40 yards with my bow - I'll be depressed about that little screw up forever! The Elk I missed had to be 1,000 lbs - he looked like a propane tank with horns. Corn fed for sure.

Nebraska residents need to be applying every year , as the Elk hunting is likely to deteriorate as they begin to issue more permits to control populations. Elk are spreading like crazy in Nebraska. My first choice would be the Box Elder Unit, but they only issue 8 permits per year, but the Elk are amazing and access is still possible.
