i cant believe i bought another hunting pack..:(

you know what? i admit it: i got caught up in all the hype on another forum and spent way to much $$ on a Kifaru pack. it is a wonderful pack. light, strong, but i just dont love stuffing the meat inside with all my gear, or having to move my gear to the outside. my K-pack is kinda dirty from use and actually has a tear in it. in some rough country, glassing a deer for friends, you need something to sit on to save your butt from sharp shale, and cactus.

this past deer season, we had such an encounter. we found a buck in some thick nasty stuff. high desert. i stayed behind on the spotting scope ready to give hand signals to the stalkers. (bro and friend) i sat for 2 hours. my butt was numb and if it was on the ground, it would be frozen, cut up, stickered, in addition to being numb. but i was lucky. i was sitting on my Mystery Ranch Dragon slayer. it propped me tall enough to see and kept me comfy for the most part.

i saw the deer topple over at the shot. i got up dusted it off and hiked up to meet the guys. i just love the cordura. it is bombproof. the DragonSlayer doesnt fit much meat tho..it is almost purely a daypack. a daypack you use when there is a truck parked somewhere.

so i ordered a Mystery Ranch Metcalf. it has the meat shelf, and it is cordura. i have elk planned and deer planned..all living out of the pack. and one backpack squirrel hunt :)

I almost went with a new kifaru pack, but need other gear upgraded/replaced before I go down that road. Hopefully you can let us know how the new pack works out for you.

My wife thinks I'm nuts and I've only got 3 different packs in 7 years.

You know, you could just keep the frame, sell the bag and buy one of the Kifaru Bags with a meat shelf, or where you haul the meat on the outside ;)

You can buy the Grab-it to haul meat on the outside of your Kifaru pack.

And don't feel bad, I'm up to four packs and I still want to try an EXO.

i have the grab it. i dont think it is the solution. the heavy load will be way out on the cantilever behind your back. and you still need to carry your bow.

i think i jumped on the Kifaru bandwagon to early. call it "pre-meatshelf" and i never understood "daypack mode". that's like scrunching up a gallon ziploc bag and calling it a quart bag. you drop a food bar into all those folds of fabric..no thanks.

I went with the EMR II and Guide Lid because I couldn't stand digging through the Timberline to look for one item. Right now that's my go to pack with my Stone Glacier Sky 7400 a close second.

Well, I think you could easily find a different Kifaru bag to do what you need as someone mentioned. From the sounds of it you have one of their (discontinued) ultra light bags, which are fairly fragile. They only use cordura now that I'm aware of.

But hey, a new pack supports the economy, right?

In reality, different people gravitate to different gear once they start buying for their own needs, rather than buying on hype. And it sounds like you found something that works now which is a great thing!
