I'm finally getting down to sharing the photos of our elk hunts this year. These elk are all OTC DIY Public land elk. We had a ton of fun & seemed to be packing meat somewhere throughout the month! We took 5 bulls in the Crew & assisted on 3 others that are close friends to us. It was a great year & am fortunate to have such good friends!

My son started the year off for us all with this bull early on that was called to 22 yards!

Thanks guys! Lefty, way more time hunting than packing! Probably an average of 5 days serious hunting per bull. We can pack a bull out in one day!

Congratulations on the great successes. That is some hole in Taylor's bull. I had one similar to that years ago. Before 1994 I would not have thought an arrow could do that kind of damage. (It looks like an archery kill.) Before then I would not have guessed how much bloodshot meat an arrow could cause.

Yes, quite a hole for sure! It is an archery kill with a Muzzy 3-bladed broadhead! That's the exit wound if I'm not mistaken.

Sheesh....I just saw this thread. Don't know how I missed it. Paul, I thought I heard some talk from the Idaho game commission they had a predator problem. I didn't realize they were talking about you!

I think with some more practice the Elknut crew could get good at this elk hunting thing.

The Oregon game commission has a very complex scientific way of getting accurate census numbers for our elk populations and in turn will determine tag numbers based on this detailed count. They fly over lots of geography....ok so maybe 10 clear cuts (who are we kidding) see one elk in 3 clear cuts. They add 55,000 for the ones they didn't see but are PROBABLY there hiding in the peripheral area. They take that number and divide it by .5 x the square root of pi (It sounds fancy and pads the ol numbers a bit) and viola you have the Oregon elk population. Idaho has it much easier. They do extensive census counts through the air flying countless hours to get an actual accurate number then simply subtract Paul's crew share and end up with their number. ;)

Ha Ha, thanks guys! No doubt there's a certain amount of guess work involved in elk surveys! (grin)
