The Favorite New Gear from This Past Season? thread got me thinking about what gear I want to purchase for next year. A coat is at the top of the gear to upgrade list. I really don’t have a coat that is warm enough for a couple hour sit yet light enough to strap onto the pack without taking up much space. I usually leave camp in a t-shirt and hoody. I have a heavy duty camo outfitters hoody strapped to the pack for when I plan on sitting for a while. It’s bulky and heavy.

Any suggestions for a light coat for 3 hours sits at 10 to 20 degrees. Temps are usually in the 20’s to 30’s in the morning where I hunt, but I would way rather be too warm than too cold. I would prefer a zipper front to help regulate, and thin material to not interfere with my bow. I’ll be rolling the jacket up and strapping it to the pack when I’m not wearing it.

I am not at all familiar with the new style hunting coats i.e. Under Armor, Sitka, Kifaru. Can anyone recommend a coat.

As you know Six layers are always the way to go. 10 to 20 is pretty chilly especially if there is wind. But I have a suggestion. It's a two part system that will serve you very well and I highly highly recommend considering it.

There are lots of Sitka users that will tell you that their Jetstream jacket is their number one piece of clothing. It's mine hands down! You'll be wearing that thing morning noon and night during bow and gun season in all but the coldest temps. It's a wind breaking machine with chest and pit zippers to let the heat out when you're on the move. It also has a perfect pocket setup and a hood. Boom!

To really turn up the heat I add a Sitka Kelvin vest underneath. Their Primaloft insulation gives you the loft you need to trap air/heat without a bunch of weight or bulk. I love the stuff. I can jam my vest into a gallon zip lok bag which is conveniently perfect to put the inner loins in later.

By having a two part system you don't have as much to lash onto your pack when it warms up. In 10 to 20 degree temps though I would say go with the Kelvin jack instead of the vest. No Sitka isn't cheap but I swear if you try those two you will be thanking me later.

I have a Sitka Jetstream jacket as well and love it. Picked it up on sale last year. Keep an eye out on ebay as sometimes they will pop up for sale there as well.

I just purchased a First lite uncompahgre (spelling?). It should handle the conditions you are describing.

I'm w the 2-layer contingent. Insulating layer is a primaloft puffy jacket or vest, most manufacturers have one in their catalog. My puffy jacket isn't camo (I already had it for daily wear), it weighs under a pound, it goes under camo outer layer like a soft shell or rain jacket. Wind, rain, snow, sitting, walking, I'm good.

I have a Kuiu Teton Soft Shell Jacket. It does a good job stopping the wind. The sales information says its water resistant. I was impressed and hunted some wet day where a rain jacket was in order.
My daughter has all clothing from Sportsmans warehouse She has an outer shell great wind breaker and she didnt complain about the rain. Value priced and worked well for her.

I'll leave it at that! They even mention a handy diaphragm pocket! Made for elk hunters I'm telling you.

I'll use my First Lite Uncompaghre for temps like that and will throw my rain jacket over it if it's windy.
