How many centerfire hunting rifles do you own?

Postby VT Sasquatch » 11 01, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I have a 30-06, a, 30-30, .308 and a 223. I have been fixated on getting another rifle somewhere between the .223 and the .308. I was thinking about a 260 Remington or a 243. My father had only one rifle. I am trying to tell myself that there is nothing a 243 or 260 can do that I couldn't do with what I have.

What do you say? Do you guys have an arsenal of hunting rifles or just a few? What do you have and what do you use it for?

hrmm might want to clarify the type of game hunting? ;)

If you just mean in general regardless of state/game..
AR's in: 223, 300blk, 6.5grendel
Bolt: Savage 11 in 308 due any day.

You have a nice core of calibers there hitting most of the common one. Do you reload or are you stuck with "Factory" ammo? You are heavy in the .30cal arena, maybe try the 6.5 or 7mm calibers? 6.5's are great as the BC on the bullets lets them carry a long ways with less wind deflection than the .30cal bullets. Both 6.5's I list are getting more common.

6.5 grendel is a very soft shooting round, really good for getting kids or smaller stature people involved shooting a big game legal caliber without the recoil. You can shoot it all day long and never have shoulder issues. It was designed to fit in the AR15 platform, but there are places out there making grendel bolt actions as well. THe round has ballistics and terminal power equal or better than 308 depending on distance and it has taken Elk out to 400yrds, and Deer much farther. smaller game like yotes, etc range is up to shooter ability.

I have heard 6.5creedmore is also a soft shooter relative to it's terminal power. It is a larger case more like a 308 in terms of size and has much higher velocity. Most major gun Mfg have 6.5creedmore rifles in their lineups.

I have an AR-15 in 5.56 and a .22 LR and .22 WMR. It is illegal to hunt with an AR in my home state.

I am thinking the same thing about the 30 caliber. The 30-30 was my father's and the .308 was a gift from a friend. I have developed the opinion that .30 caliber is much larger than necessary for whitetails in the east. My friend uses a 300 WSM and we rarely shoot past 75 yards out here. In fact, I have killed 8 bucks with a rifle and none was past 50 yards and 7 were within 35. I think people gravitate toward more power than is necessary. I think my .223 would do an adequate job on deer out here with a good bullet like a Barnes.

My thought is that a short and light rifle in 260 Remington or 243 might be nice to carry for deer. But, that might be excessive to have that many rifles.

I don't reload.

Give me a holler when your new boom stick comes in. We can go to the range on JBLM and break it in. It's been a while since I've been shooting.

I only own one rifle; .308 Weatherby Vanguard II. Haven't done anything with it except shoot targets. VT, you have a nice range of rifles and all will/can do the job on most big game critters (and everything down to varmint size), and, are not so big that they are uncomfortable at the range. My younger brother has an older Remington 22-250 with a bull barrel and that thing just flat "shoots". I guess you could add a big boomstick to your arsenal; maybe a .338 :D

Sure thing! I have always wanted to see what the range on base was like. If you can find out what I am going to need to get on base with my weapon? Pretty sure there is some sort of preregistration I have to do.

I have a nice AR in 6.5 grendel that I could stand stretch it's legs too. I have a range 3miles from house, but it is short, it would be nice to stretch out to 300yrds and really check my ballistics!! I hope to get a bunch of rounds for the 308 reloaded in the next few weeks, will work on grendel as well.

.223 AR
22-250
.270
.300 win mag

Don't hunt with any of them. Strictly a bowhunter and have been for many years now. I'm probably going to get a .243 soon. My boys are getting old enough to go hunting and rifle hunting will be better for them when they are young. They can then shoot it when they get a little older. I'd also like to have a .375 H&H because I don't have one.

I have a few rimfires as well. 2 .22's, 22mag and a 30-30.

Nothing wrong with the.308 you have. The Barnes 165gr factory loads shoot well out of mine and work fine on deer. 243 works well too. You could also look into a 257 Roberts if you want some variety.

Too Many   243-2, 2506, 7mm saum, 7mm08, 30.30, 35 remington, 303 British, Custom 7x57, 300 Win mag, 270, 280,257 roberts, 264 win mag, and a few more but I would have to open some safes and take inventory. And guess what, one of those goes with me 99.99 percent of the time.

That's funny, you have all the in-between stuff that I don't. I would like a 300 win mag or 300 WSM too if I were to ever hunt in Alaska.

DBLGBL: Which goes with you 99.99 percent of the time? My guess is the .280.

VT,

The 7mm Saum does it all for me. It is a model seven from Remington's custom shop. It carries well and shoots where I look. I load it hot with 140 grain Nosler partitions. Similar to the 280 but in a more compact rifle. Good luck in your quest.

That's a neat cartridge. I just looked it up but had never heard of it. Unfortunatetly, I am stuck on the East Coast for the forseeable future and probably wouldn't make good use of it here. I am really jealous of you guys living out West. I hope to move there one day - hopefully while I still have my health.

.22
6.5x284Norma
25-06

Weird collection, but I think that I won all 3 at various conservation banquets.
Not a single pistol for me
I enjoy shooting shotguns and blackpowder more than rifles for some reason.

22 mag, 223 KelTec, 270, 7mm RM, .50 inline ML, .54 Hawken ML. Of these the 270 fits in your arsenal gap. I agree w those who suggest checking out a 6.5, whether 6.5x55 or 6.5 Creedmoor.

That's funny. I shouldn't have assumed. You have an arsenal fit for Alaska. You may be hunting elk in your home state before long.

Everyone seems like a collector to me....I only have a 338 win mag which I use for deer and elk....I don't want anymore, that money is better spent elsewhere, I've always been very practical, I own 4 guns total, the 1 above, a 22lr, a 12 gauge shotgun and a .380 pistol...all I need....seems my friends have arsenals

.30-06
.358 Win
30-30
.243
.50 muzzle loader

They all have their purpose, but for me the .30-06 gets the nod 85% of the time.

Well, I'm about 6 short of having the perfect number of centerfire rifles.

I'd like to get (in this order);
1) 338 Big Baer/Allen Magnum/Chey-Tac/SnipeTac chambering using a Defiance receiver w/a 28" Bartlein/Brux/Krieger bbl
2) 7mm-300 Win mag (or similarly a 7mm Mashburn Super Magnum) chambering using a trued Rem 700 or clone with a 26" Bartlein/Brux/Krieger bbl
3) 375 Warlord chambering using the big BAT receiver w/a 28" Bartlein/Brux/Krieger bbl
4) 45-70 Gov't Henry Rifle in the All-Weather flavor
5) 243 Win or a 22-250 Rem using a Rem 700 clone with a 24"-26" Bartlein/Brux/Krieger bbl
6) a good AR platform .223/5.56mm

So, yeah, I have a centerfire rifle but i'd like to add the above to 'round out my stable'.
