Colorado rifle success!

I hunted first rifle in unit 70 with the Rocking R Ranch and their guides. I connected with this 4x4 on Sunday morning. My guide spotted him at 1000 yds, and we worked our way into range. I set up in break in the scrub oaks between two meadows. Rob, my guide, cow called him in to about 135 yds. I took my shot and felt it was a good one. After a few minutes, we went to the spot he was standing and couldn't find any blood. We searched carefully in the direction he ran and still no blood! We expanded our search area in hopes of cutting a blood trail, and it began to look like I may have missed. Rob, my guide, decided to give it another chance and went back to near where the bull ran at the shot. On his hands and knees he carefully combed through the grasses and shrubs, and found a tiny drop of blood, then another a couple feet away, and then another drop. He tracked that bull by droplets of blood here and there for about 75 yards. Sometimes loosing the trail, and then backtracking some more. Finally the trail led to an area of thick oak, chokecherry, mesquite, and scrub pines. We found him dead, laying down like he was bedding. My shot entered his left side, clipping his guts, and exiting through his liver. There was a sizeable blood splotch on the ground there. I used a 7 mm Mag and Nosler Partitions in 160 gr.

I didn't do so well.
The wind storm five days before the opener of the 2nd season in Colorado that downed scores of trees and the warm weather, put a damper on elk sightings and them using historical travel routes. We did manage to fill one bull tag with a five point. But in 6 days of hunting for four hunters, that was the only elk sighted.

glad you found it.... last year had same type of synaro. shot up at incline went through lung and out towards top. so all we would get is a tiny blood spot here and there. had that bad feeling going through me. finally found the elk at the bottom of the ridge piled up between some down pines. Boy was I relieved. all blood was just piling up inside and a little bit would just come out that tiny 30 cal entrance hole..
I did get a nice 4x4 Muley and a cow elk this year. I guess we should feel good alot of people didn't do so well from what I am hearing .

Anyone have any updates on how the 2nd season was? Or the start of the 3rd is going? I am headed out for the 4th season and it looks like its still supposed to be abnormally warm....we had the same issue last year and struggled to see elk.
