Broken Bow Sight While Hunting

This year while out hunting I sat down for a minute and looked at my bow. I came to realize that my single pin had snagged on something and was just tangling by the fiber. After a 2 hour hike back to the truck and hour and galf drive to town some J and B Weld was the best I could find for a quick patch. So I was wondering if anyone has come across this or what anyone may do to help prevent it. I was thinking about possibly using a can cooler with a rubber band to cover the sight up.

One time I jumped over a log while hunting and my bow snagged on a branch on the log. Went right into my sight and took out all five pins. End of that days hunting for anything over 10 yds.
Another year my drop away rest came apart in mid September.
I now have a backup bow that is in my truck. So many things can go wrong on a compound bow. Once a friend sliced his string while hiking in thick stuff. Ended his hunt for many days. Some things take a long time to get set back up.
KUIU makes a bow cover that has a pouch that slips over the sight. Might work but many other things could still go south on you.
A backup bow is a big investment but can save your ass when the hunting is the best it gets all year. That's an investment too.
One thing I do have in my pack is a piece of tape with sight pin elevations and sight ring top and bottom marked. If I lose a pin, or all of them!, I can easily install a new one to the correct elevation. It could even double as a pin in a pinch as it only covers one side of the sight left of center.

I should mention that when I got home I called the manufacturer to explain what happened. After speaking with him and explaining what happened they had no problem sending me a complete replacement sight. Now that is good customer service.

What sight was it? Im not blaming the company or anything like that but it could help to see if theres any remedies to avoid it from happening again.


I cut a bow sting once out hunting. It almost ruined my season. Long story. I had another issue with a drop away rest. Like mentioned above, i now have a backup bow or two. When i hunt out of state i usually bring three bows with me. The biggest thing with backup bows is to shoot them periodically even if its the same exact bow as your primary bow.

They have commercially available sight covers that you can buy. Check Lancaster's site they carry several differnt models.

It 's an AXT Driver single pin. Had it for 3 years and love it but now it's got me wondering. Be tough to leave them for another brand with the service I got from them.

Back country is hard on gear, period. I've broken both a Spot Hogg and Axcel sight on elk hunts. It happens, brand does't really make much difference.

I really worried about that kind of stuff happening last year. So this year I just brought another sight with. I had it all sighted in and ready to go. If you were packing in you could always leave it in the truck so you didn't have to haul it all the way in to the backcountry with you. I try to be easy on my gear, but things happen that you can't prevent unfortunately.

I think my plan now would be to use the one I repaired as a back up and put the new one on that they sent me.
