New Mexico Unit 9

Postby Camo » 10 17, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I have located a bull elk hunt in New Mexico Unit 9. I am told the ranch is mostly open rolling pasture with a large plateau on the east end that has quite a bit of cover and there is a small water source. Trying to find out more about the place but I believe it is about 50 miles north of Albuquerque. Owner says it is a very isolated area with no utilities, no water, and no camp for the hunters. I have asked the owner to send me more info. He says the ranch is adjoined by public lands and that the public land hunters run the elk onto his place, especially in the later seasons. Very small local heard, maybe 30. Does anyone know anything about this area? The owner is a guy named Pete. I share more info as he sends it to me.

Is this for a 2016 hunt? Do you know what ranch it is? Is it a ranch only tag or unitwide? I looked at the landowner lists (see below) and don't see any Petes on the list. I have a buddy that bow hunted on Lobo Ranch which is in that unit. Killed a nice bull in country you described. If you get the ranch name, one of my rancher clients might know the place.

Not sure how much you know about NM landowner tags, but it is pretty important to know whether it is unit wide or ranch only. As it sounds, ranch only=hunt only on ranch, UW=hunt anywhere in unit that is public or you have written permission. If a ranch wants to be receive UW tags, they generally have to open their ranch to public land hunters. Ranch only they do not.
