Need Help With My Cot

I woke up every morning with a backache and did not sleep well at night tossing and turning all night. Made for tough hunting being tired all the time. I have a 3" colman air mat that doesn't hold air anymore and it not that old. Sick of spending money on the air type mattress that just get hole in after 10 uses. I went to Cabelas looked at all the option they had mostly air mattress and one 4 inch pad the smashed down to a half inch (not good) for $120. I was looking for other option when I stumble on a 6 or 8 inch memory foam for a twin bed (38x75) for $88 the review are good. I mentioned it to a fellow hunter in or group and he said pick one up for him. Now, I'm thinking about buying a Queen (60x80) for $122 and cutting it in half.
Has any fellow base camp hunters tried cutting memory foam in half? Did it work? What do you think 6" or 8". Pros and Cons.
What does everyone think is the best option?

My hunting buddy has taken his base camp cot to crazy levels. It's twin sized (yep) and he starts with putting a cut to size piece of plywood on his cot. From there, he has a twin mattress and a large, thick piece of the foam you mentioned on top of that. I swear the darn thing is 3 feet tall, lol. I use a large Slumberjack cot with a plethora of air type mattresses on top. It works pretty well but, I'm gonna take my partner's lead next year and cut a piece of plywood to size for my cot and look at getting a thick piece of foam like you mentioned. I think the plywood helps with back support (prevents concave sinking in the middle). Perhaps shoring up your cot with a chunk of plywood underneath the thick foam would do you well next year. Where did you see the 6-8" memory foam at...Cabelas?

I used a 3 inch piece of memory foam with my cot for several years. The main advantage was that your air mattress didn't slide all over. The foam collapses down to almost flat so if it is your only pad better not be a side sleeper. I got an exped air mattress and don't need the foam pad anymore.

Eric, take a look at cabela's XL outfitter cot combined with the cot pad. It's very large and extremely comfortable. An easy way to make the guys in camp jealous!

I used to use a Cabela's Lounge Cot with 4" memory foam, it made for a very nice sleeping situation.


Now, since I live where I hunt, I just sleep at home every night.

I bought a new twin bed frame from Goodwill ,cut slats for it and over laid a 1/2" thick piece of OSB on it.Then set a twin air bed on top of that.Just like being at home. Total cost was less than $50. Putting an air bed or air mattress on the ground,even with a tarp or? under it shortens the life. As does folding or unfolding when they are cold.

If you use any type of foam,you need to put something between it and your bed roll that is water proof. If not, body moisture that you don't think escapes,gradually builds up in the foam and each night as it gets colder and more moisture. You will sleep colder and colder. If in real cold weather, you will eventually be sleeping on iced foam.

The next thing you need to do is every morning turn your bed roll back and leave it that way all day so the bottom can dry out the escaped body moisture

I used an old army cot this year that is a loaner from Phantom. The sliding is the one thing I noticed the most during our Idaho hunt. I had a smaller mummy pad centered in the cot then a large 3" thick self inflating pad ontop of that. The big pad I bought @ Sportco for $25, let it self inflate and then a couple big breaths into it and it was very firm. Comfort was good (As phantom can atest, I was out cold and sleeping soundly enough I did not hear the rabid badger roaring under my cot), but I noticed the top pad would slide around and end up partially of the cot at times.

Yes Phantom's camp buddy does take it above and beyond the call of duty. That had to be the most plush rack out setup i have seen outside of a house. That 6 man tent he setup for himself was looking a tad bit cramped once he was all setup!

Just got back from 8 days in the woods sleeping on my cot setup. The last two nights it started to bow in the middle which is typical but still very comfortable.
