Idaho rutting activity

After reading the thread from curly tail I thought it would be good to start a separate but equal information and conversation for Idaho. Thanks curly for the idea. I just got home from southeast Idaho yesterday. Was there from 9-12 till 9-21. This was my 4th year to this area so I'm getting to know it fairly well . Weather was warm with a day and a half of rain in the middle of our hunt . Bugling was very sparse early on with just a bugle or two followed by silence. The bugling never did really get to the frenzy like we hunters would like but does it ever get to that fevered point. Lol. Had several good encounters with some good bulls and passed up a shot on a small cow. Overall bugling was sporadic but still able to find a few. We were not able to bring home an elk but as always will be lured back to the Rockies next year. Just for a little perspective about expectations , on our trip home we talked to a couple of young men who had hunted Colorado and they were absolutely thrilled to have heard two bugles. As always I thank God for the opportunity to have spent time in elk camp.

It picked up last Saturday for my wife and I... Needed about ten more minutes of daylight but we weren't able to close the deal. We made it back up Tuesday afternoon and only heard one bugle and then watched from a distance as the bull moved his cows out of the draw. Still learning the area and would be fine if we could get some time to hunt, just running out for a evening here or there makes it hard because it's usually late when you find them and then it's a guess where they moved to

Seems like the bulls in the area I hunted up north had a schedule this year. When we first arrived, they were singing like a choir and then when the weather switched a bit, they got lock jaw for three days. Started to sing again pretty good around the 23d but then slowed down again for a few days. They never really did get into a worked up/vocal frenzy this year for some reason but we did get into them a bit but minimal close encounters. Silly buggers.

Our North idaho hunt was very short this year in a good way.9/19 - 9/21 there was very little to no unsolicited elk talk wich is normal for our area . They where however very willing to call in a lost pleading cow (me) and give up there location wich proved to be the end for 2 beautiful north idaho bulls. What I did notice was these Bulls seemed to stay in there feeding areas all day due to cool wet conditions .
