2016 Elk Rut

Postby Mathewsz7-elkridge » 09 27, 2016 •  [Post 1]

With this only being my first season hunting I have nothing to compare to. I was wondering what all you guys seen and heard in the high country this year. If you don't made leave the state you were hunting in and what time frame. Would you say this year rutting action was weak, low, mild, medium, hot, on fire?

I hunted Colorado from the 15th to the 21st. Heard a few bugles from the 15th to 18th nothing after that. Each of those days it wasn't much. Most importantly heard from one bull was for bugles. With not having much to go off of I would rate it at a mild rutting activity for my hunt. Look forward to reading everyone's input.

I tagged out on labor day weekend, but from my short time in the woods, I'd say the rut was off to a slow start in my area. Few bugles, and lots of lone cow/calf groups at a time most are already herded up. Not sure how the rut progressed, but definitely delayed compared to last year.

I can honestly say that there seem to be more animals this year and the rut is definitely hotter in my neck of the woods of Montana.

Hunted opening week and heard a couple bugles. Had a bull bugling hot and heavy the morning of Sept 1 until 9 a.m. when I shot one of his cows. Colorado. Very weak, but what I expected for hunting the first week.
