PA's live elk cam

Postby sojurner 65 » 09 06, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Thought you might be interested in this live cam from the PGC. They have this camera in an area with high elk concentration on private land, with no hunting in this area. But the elk still act like elk. All times are EST though, so if your up at 4 AM out in CO., or about 3 in the afternoon, the action picks up.

Fortunately I can view the cam, but didn't realize my sound was on. Just had my office blare the sounds of a meadow full of crickets singing away.

Watched an old bull with his 8 cows last night on the cam, about 7 PM. He did some bugling and tried to mount a cow or two but they weren't ready. Looks as if he might be a bit gimpy in the left hind leg. Loved watching it.

Had a nice 6x6 laying down close to the camera and a harem of 7-8 cows in the field. Couldn't tell if there was a smaller bull in the back of the field.

Listening to this 7x8 Scream his head off tonight... They're bugling like mad. Beautiful. Shot my Bull too early this year and there wasn't much to hear yet in the woods.

Unfortunately it's off-camera, but I can hear a couple bulls battling... Pretty good background sounds while I work tonight.

Good pic off the web cam. I've been watching the action for the last 2-3 weeks and expecting a fight soon. Looks as if some breeding will take place soon. Big boy has been raking the trees in the weed field in the background.

That definitely got pretty intense. Looked like that monster had 3-4 other REALLY nice bulls trying to scoop one of his ladies. Awesome to watch! I stayed up past my bedtime, but it was well worth it.

Glad you guys are enjoying it. I watched that big bull last night. Every time some other bull would bugle off in the distance, he headed in that direction to check it out. But he wouldn't leave the cows. A couple of years ago I backpacked around that area in September. One night I was awoken by three bulls screaming from different directions!

That field is in Benezette PA, but I'm trying to find it on Google Earth - any coordinates available or no due to poaching concerns? I learned so much about Elk behavior last night! I'm trying to get a lay of the land and see where they elk were coming and leaving from.

My wife was watching too! She said she might be down to head into the woods with me next year! SUCCESS!

They are somewhat secretive about this location as it is on private property but very close to a state game lands, so I'm told. It is near Benezette, north of town, past the Elk Country Visitor Center, and is supposed to be in view from one of the elk overlooks they have. There is no elk hunting permitted in this area. Try searching along Winslow Hill Rd

I've wasted too much time looking for "a rectangular field with a road on one side that turns from paved to dirt" on work hours. Its probably best that the location isn't broadcast on the ultra-webs anyway!

Awesome to see the program working so well!

I'd decided that I'd had this camera and herd of elk pretty well patterned, but last night... nothing. Just like the elk woods: sometimes they're just not talking. Looks like today's going to be a different story. I've learned a lot listening as I do my homework in the evenings. Thanks for posting!

Tuesday evening I happened to be on at the right moment to see two bulls fight for 30 seconds. One had his harem of 8 in the field with another bull across the road bugling a challenge. Harem Master accepted the challenge, met the intruder and after 2 or 3 clashes of the antlers, it was over. Exciting!!!
