So? What happened thsi past week in the elk woods

Postby Lefty » 09 19, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I brought my grandaughter and daughter along.
The plan was my daughter chased deer while I set up camp. that only took three times longer than when Im alone.
We decided they would ATV ride/hunt,.. well just bum around near the main road, pack camp and meet me late afternoon the bottom.
9:30 I unladed all my pack for breckfast on a bare knob to glass. As I was sitting down a bull bugled 110 yards away. Im guessing the bull was on the edge of the timber not in it, saw me coming and left.
1:30 a bull somewhere in an area wth a number of seeps and wallows. I glassed as I moved in and saw nothing.
In the evening we went to listen for bulls at my origin pre-season plan A.
My daughter heard a bull respond to my bugle but claimed it sounded "tuby" We ran to the edge of the hill I called again and had three responses form different directions,.. and one was a bit "tuby"
Earlier I had told my daughter often the bugles that sound like people are really elk,... I dont think that was the case this time

The two bugles were enough to convince my daughter where we are hunting Saturday. Hunting plan A

Good luck to you! I do have some intel on a bull moose I saw Saturday morning. I will PM you. I still have not heard a bugle that was not another hunter. Headed back up Friday night, but the weekend weather is not looking good right now.

Dan; My suggestion from your tent go east or west really either way then straight down in the thick stuff where there isnt roads. The rocky stuff is tough but hopefully the sheep and cows havnt been in it.

Every bugle was a single on Saturday.

I talking Sunday so unless we kill something late we will be in and out Saturday

Park your ATV at the bottom somewhere so it is only down hell,... hill ( Wow I think that was a true Freudian typo) all day. I have the name and number of an outfitter that will pack out game for $200

You may see my daughter on the ATV glassing from the top of the drainage , we use to glass from the top fro spring bear.. speaking of bears. The grizzle we saw last week was trapped and weighed is the largest grizzle ever recorded in the lower 48. So maybe after spending a day in a culvert trap he isn't so fond of people or buy some more back up deterrent
I kind of like the idea of catch and release ;)
I hadnt mentioned. Where you first saw me,.. the guys with the camp at the gate were in on two active bulls a spike and a big one. I have never seen anoyne back that road, ever, until this year

Is it the sheep? so many hunters?

My wife and I went out on Saturday.... We went about 3 miles lower then we've been hunting to a new place... We hiked a 4 mile loop and never saw a track... Got back to the car with an hour of shooting light left and headed for another new area...JACKPOT!!! I got out of the pickup and told my wife I was just going to walk about 100 yards into the timber and bugle. I did my little walk , stood for a minute just kinda looking around, and as I pulled my bugle up a bull bugles about 200 yards away from me. I ran back and got my wife and up the hill we went... He sounded off again and we closed the distance and I gave a couple of cow calls...every note I made he bugled to, as I set my wife up I could see him coming to the trees, wind was perfect for once, but we had 2 things working against us. 1 my wife has very little hunting experience, 2 we only had about 10 minutes of shooting light left. It was broken timber and the bull held up at about 50-60 yards... I kept trying to back up but my wife wanted me to stay by her to help... Long story short we ran out of daylight and as bad as I hated it we had to back out. The bull followed us must the way down the mountain and in our few minutes we got 2 other Bulls going too.... Tomorrow afternoon we will be back
