I can irritate everybody - even the elk

Postby RAMMONT » 09 14, 2016 •  [Post 1]

So, a little background.

My wife and I moved to Montana two years ago. I grew up in Arizona and have lived in many states and a couple different countries. I've hunted all my life - when I could fit it to my schedule. The most elk hunting I did was in Flagstaff, AZ and Northern Utah. Like most people, my hunting was just random wanderings without much study or knowledge, a lot of work but not much know-how. So now that I live in a very rural place and I'm retired I spend a lot more time reading, studying, and actually going out several times a week to apply what I've learned.

So, yesterday I went to a place that I identified because of its proximity to water, it's geographic structure, and distance from the nearest public access - I ran in to elk pretty quickly - success! It feels good to find the right place at the right time. But I had to laugh, I pushed too hard and moved a nice bull out this little bench area, he ran about 100 yards away stopped and bugled at me. I'm a rifle hunter so I couldn't do anything about seeing him other than just watching him trot away. He walked a few more yards, looked back in my direction and bugled again. He did this several times as he worked his way up higher and over a ridge via the southern aspect of the nearest mountain. I don't use a call so I wasn't able to talk with him but he kept stopping, turning my direction, and bugling.

I guess it was his way of telling me that I was a jerk for disturbing his evening meal.

I'm actually thinking about archery but the few times I've tried a bow I really sucked, but it looks like Montana allows crossbows and that's so similar to a rifle that I might actually be able to hit something.

you won't pick up a bow and be nailing bullseye right off the bat vita a lot of practice in form and tweaking equipment to get the correct arrow flight. don't just go to a crossbow because a bow takes work.
