what's this bull saying?

This situation has happened to me three times that I can recall. I let out a location bugle and get a response - but it's not a bugle or anything. Rather, the bull gives more of a 1/2 second growl-bugle-sound. I hesitate to put "growl" in there because it doesn't sound intimidating or threatening at all. I've interpreted as a "hey, I hear you, but I'm not feeling like making lots of fuss about anything right now". In all cases, I figured the bull would be interested in ... something. So I tried sneaking in and cow calling in one case. At other times I tried some gentle raking and making a similar noise as the bull... in all cases, I never saw nor heard him again.

Thoughts?

I would say that it is a response. Just a lazy non-fired up response. You may need to be more patient than usual if attempting to call him in, and he may be nonresponsive despite your best efforts.

I would still pursue him however, as you might be able to change his mood.

I think given that fact that you used a location bugle .. that is his version of letting you know I'm here...

If the wind was in your favor, I would go after him.. he's there and there is no reason for him to leave very far. Agree with Curly Tail.. be patient and go after him.

Kris - these calls were within 100 yards of where I *thought* the bull was. But after making this sound we never heard anything more.

Our approach was to play it patient and let out a couple soft cow calls. After 10 minutes of doing this on and off, we stepped it up a little. 5 more minutes, nothing showed, so I slowly amped it up. After maybe 15-20 minutes of nothing, I would let out a bugle (the same one that got the response earlier). Nothing.
