Outfitter Locations

Hello Everyone,

New to the forum and my first year elk hunting in Colorado. We have called the game wardens trying to get as much local information as possible...the big thing is we are trying to do our own thing, DIY, and dont want to be in the crowds...going deep. My one concern is running into outfitters or hiking all that way and seeing a horse camp. What is the best way to contact outfitters to find out where theyre going or to find out? Just trying to maintain space.

In my experience, going deeper isn't necessarily what gets you away from the crowds. I don't know the best way to find where outfitters are located, but I know we humans can climb steeper slopes than horses. So find that one doable route into an area that horses can't get to, and you're going to leave the outfitters (and almost every DIYer) in the dust.

p.s. http://www.hillmap.com/ is really useful for understanding the actual steepness of slopes you see on topo maps.

p.p.s sorry I can't answer your question about the outfitters better. Others will chime in I'm sure!

i spoke with a colorado forestry employee he gave me a link to check out outfitters, but he said they do not know where there location will be. so the link is basically useless

The forestry service can help you out. One of the members here sent me a map and list from the area we will be hunting.

After my third call to forest services I was given a map of the location of the outfitter camps a lone with a list of the outfitters that use the area. I then called the outfitters to find out how many people they had hunting the time frame is will be out. The outfitters in my area were very easy to talk to. When you call forest service ask for the person that deals with the outfitters no one else even new the outfitters have to register there camp location.
