Guys I have a leica.. love it.. but it does not do trigonometry...first question.. How relevant is the trigonometry in you guys experience? and What do you guys recommend?

I have the Nikon Archer's Choice, which has the arc compensation, I value that feature for not only hunting out of a treestand but also for a steep uphill or downhill shot, which is definitely a factor in elk country, it is very nice to know the true distance of the shot and to not have to worry about aiming high or low depending on the angle of the shot.

I have Leupold 1200i tbr. I had a Bushnell without the arc and most of the time you won't have a big difference. I can say the leupold is clearer and the number are in red instead of black which are easier to read in low light

I have one but cannot make myself carry it along. I suppose if I did stalk hunts for antelope I might use it but I prefer to judge distance or shoot instinctively.

I too have a leupold 1200i tbr. I wouldn't leave home without it.

I have a Leica that I've had for many years. A quality tool for sure. I also have a Vortex that I got from Paul at the Elknut store. It has the angle compensation in it. I actually never use my Leica anymore. The Vortex is that nice. The angle compensation IS important on angled shots. I think it is critical in steep mountain terrain whether archery or rifle hunting.Not to say you can't get by without it (I did for most of my life) but, it is one less thing to think about in the heat of the moment.

I have a Nikon Laser 600. I like it, simple, easy to operate and read in all light. Even TBM could figure it out lol.
Seriously tho, as stated before, there isn't much trig involved until you get very steep up or downhill. When there is, and say I'm ranging a tree 30 yds down a steep hill, I just range it at a point on the trunk level with my eyes (don't look down, look straight out). That will give you the correct yardage. In other words or trigonometry, that's the side of the triangle that your looking for.
Learned that a few years ago, works well for me.

Just scored a great deal on Craigslist. Found a Vortex Ranger 1000 for $200. New condition too! It was the urban legend where the old wife was getting rid of her recently passed husbands gear.
It has the "trig" or angle compensating function feature. Nice, seems accurate from 25ft up in a stand anyway, but the most noticable difference from the Nikon is the optics, holy crap! Much clearer and brighter, and 6x vs. 4x is nice too. I will surely leave the binos at camp when elk hunting now for sure.
If you're still looking or shopping I think Paul (Elknut) is a dealer if I'm not mistaken. Worth a look.
