I suspect they have nightmares about me! I know the local deer seem to spook quicker at my scent than when others are in the stand. I can just walk around a plot and make the deer go nockturnal. It is uncannily how they know who the hunters are...but they have probably seen me kill about 40 of their cousins.

You may want to consider taking a shower occasionally.

I like to imagine that the elk are thinking about how they outsmarted me again. Even on a great year, most get away. Just imagine a lead cow telling her friends as they walk by one of my tree stand locations; "this is another place where that little moron perches like a squirrel to try an ambush us". "Goofy Joe forgot and went in to wallow last year, and paid the price. Everyone knows, don't go there in September."
Anyway there is nothing to the "smell of death". I have heard that nonsense since I was a kid. I have had elk walk right past a dead animal, and pay absolutely no attention to it. I have seen a cub bear, fawn deer and calf elk hang around their dead mothers. The scent of death is not any problem. The scent of a human regardless of who they are is. Still I have felt bad about a calf hanging around its dead mother when the hunter was butchering. It was not my cow.
