How many days of pics to sit...

Postby stringunner » 08 21, 2016 •  [Post 1]

I just got back from checking cameras. Will post a few pics tomorrow from the office.

Just curious for those that use game cameras and treestands, how often do you want to see elk frequenting an area you have a camera at to feel confident enough to sit your stand or blind? Obviously many factors (hunting pressure probably being the most prevalent) will move animals around and out. But say you plan to hunt a stand or blind on the opener, and you have a couple spots with cameras to choose from, how do you determine which spot to sit?

I have a location that I get good elk pics 5-7 times a season Ill sit there when Im too old to hunt the mountains.
Depends on what your goals and expectations are. I would sit on a stand just to be out and hunting,..with that said in the long run something ends in the freezer for the year
I sat in a bear blind this spring waiting on a 180 spring weight bear 5 evenings and two mornings because of light color, when I could have sat on a better chance blackie.
Ive mentioned this before I scouted 17 days on one elk two years ago,.. the wolves got him before I did.
Ive only had pics of one consistent, mostly everyday bull. As the season changes so do some elk.

Stringunner, in your area it does not matter. You can have multiple hits each day before the season and nothing after that. Too often areas clear out right near the season opener and they are gone. You have to play along and keep monitoring. Hopefully you and an elk meet somewhere along the line. I will see you at camp. All the best.

I changed areas a couple years ago and got lots of pictures all through August. I only got to hunt opening evening (I shot over a small 6 point :?) and the 3rd evening. Our last picture in September was on the 5th. I found that it's an August area and then they move out.... Atleast that's what they have done the last 2 years.

For me to sit I just want to feel confident there are elk in the area and that it is my best chance to take an elk that day... If they are talking I have a tough time sitting :D

Good luck swede
