layered foam target issues

I have a layered foam target that is only 4 months old. this is my second in the last year that i have had to buy due to the layers not stopping my arrows efficiently. I am shooting a 405gn arrow at about 298 Ft per Sec. when i shoot i have to double up the targets to keep my arrows from going all the way thru my target and hitting the fence or whatever is behind the target.

What can i do to stop this from happening other than just buying an expensive dense solid foam target? as it is i have already spent $150 in the last year and now im already having to get another one.

any other tips of thoughts guys?

Broadheads or field points? The layered (vertical layers) foam target I have is meant for broadheads only. I guess the fp's crush the foam or something. I use a bag target for fp, and foam for bh.

I find that if I pull my broadheads straight out, I tear the guts out of the foam, ruining it. When removing broadheads, I pull straight initially, and as the bh gets closer to the entry point I begin to twist the arrow so that the blades cleanly follow the path they took entering the target while spinning. I end up with a nice clean hole and slices, and very little (if any) loss of foam. Seems to be extending its life far more than last year's where the wife kept pulling them straight out, tearing out foam with each bh.

im shooting FP at it now. i have shot BH to test flight along with FP and they hit the same so i am practicing with FP to save my razor sharpened BH for hunting day.

Ya, I've went through more than my fair share of foam and bag type targets. None seem to last and ultimately end up in chunks and pieces all over the place. Finally spend the money 4 years ago or so and grabbed a Rinehart target (the larger one with replaceable core). Absolutely zero issues with this target standing up to FPs and BHs. I've replaced the center insert once in the time I've owned it. Just a thought.

I buy a bail how hay or straw from a local farmer. It only last a season but it's relatively cheep and it's huge. It makes it nice for those 100 yards shots where a little flinch is a foot. I just role the bail a little if it starts to get shot out. I only shoot it at 40 yards and beyond though. It doesn't stop it inside 40 very well I have a bag and block target for that. It just saves a lot of use for me which I only shoot a couple inside 40 anyway.

Buy a bag target for FP's and save the layered foam for BH use only. The Morrell Outdoor Range target is the best bag target I have found by far. I would generally go through 2 of the cheaper bags, Yellow Jacket, Hurricane, Delta Speed bag, etc every year. I've been shooting the Outdoor Range for 2 years and it is still stopping arrows.

If you want to stick with a combo type target then the Rinehart 18-1 is pretty tough to beat. The Rhino block is bigger but doesn't last near as well as the 18-1.

I use a polyfill drum. It has lasted over 20 years and close to a billion shots. Homemade! Doesn't dull heads or break them. Even Bullheads can be shot dozens of times. Last a lifetime.. cost about $60...one finger arrow removal...that's right, I said one..uno. top that.

I have a Block target that has been eaten up by broadheads over the past few years. Get a complete pass through in the sweet spots and now the edges are getting patchy. A lot of the foam and layers are coming out with each shot. I'm going to use some left over "Great Stuff" spray insulation foam you get at your home store, and spray and fill the cavity I've created and let it cure. That stuff is really tenacious and binds with everything. I think it should work pretty well. I'll let you know how it comes out. For a few bucks it's worth a try.

Ok, here are the results with photos. The arrow in the after picture would have been a clear unrestricted pass through for about the past two years. The foam is kind of ugly , but did the trick. I can still use the target for my practice broadheads, for another year or so. Save my good targets for FP practice. Total cost about $6 on $130 plus target. Thinking of filling a box with the foam, sticking a rope in it for a handle and taking it with me for sight in at the hunting spot. If someone steals out of the truck it's I'm not out much, and it will be light and small.

if you happen to live in an agricultural area that has sheep, looking into getting a wool bale. they are big and heavy, so you'll need extra space to put it, but it'll stop and arrow you throw it at, probably for decades.

5x5x8 straw bales are $10 ( or free). you haul around here. Good for 3 years if you dont water them.

I have a carpet target,. maybe 75 pieces of carpet, cut 13" x 31". A flooring guy gave me carpet, cut the carpet to size, weld a frame and 2 hours to learn how to stack and compress the target: 6 hours and have used it for 8 years old. I used florescent paint for spots, ( left at a job site) now black paint works just fine.
I think I got the idea off of Archery talk. Maybe 1500-3000 arrows a year, only a few broad-heads
To do it all over I would make a bigger target and use only bur-bur carpet for ease.

just so you know 1 billion shots over 20 years is 136,986,301 per day. You must be a crack shot shooting over 100K shots per day. Impressive!

Point is the target can take a lifetime of shots. It getts better with age as the fibers pack over time which helps for standard heads. Bullheads need to be shot in loose, unpacked fiber.
