Mid Day Meal in the Elk Woods?

Postby WapitiTalk1 » 08 10, 2016 •  [Post 1]

What do you folks pack for a mid day meal? I know we all have a plethora of granola bars, trail mix, protein bars, dried fruit, little snickers bars ;), etc. in our quart zip locks for the day's adventures but what is your normal packed mid day feast?

I rotate between PB and jelly or honey on MRE bread or bagels (recently Lamrith introduced me to the bagel 1/2s which work nicely; the honey and jelly are the little packets you can "acquire" from your local restaurant or grab from cash and carry on a larger scale) or, Tuna Creations on MRE bread or a bagel. Whaddya you folks pack for your mid day, sit down, main lunch snack?

Generally a sandwich for me. If it looks to be a cold day I'll go with a mountain house or some ramen noodles.

The Bagel thins were a nice 1st try by the hole in the middle made it a challenge to not have pb&jelly all over the place. I tried these last trip and they worked nice.

Jiffy PB on the go and a few restaurant jelly packs, plus one of those and a plastic knife in a 1qt ziplock and there's a quick lunch and escape from the granola, trail mix diet.

Last year we tried peanut butter on tortillas... thought it would be calorie dense. Just so happened that I got a bull that morning. Imagine me sitting there looking at a bull with peanut butter stuck to the roof of my mouth thinking about the mess that was going to be on my hands and trying my best to catch the peanut butter oozing out all sides of the tortilla onto those same hands and knowing I needed SOME kind of fuel for the pack out... well... that peanut butter just kept growing and growing on the roof of my mouth and what felt like an eternity later, I got the rest choked down. All this to say I will not be taking tortillas and peanut butter for a meal this fall. ;)

If that bull had been gut-shot I'd have been losing my breakfast as well, that's for certain!

PB&J or a tuna sandwich for me, along with a granola bar, jerky and an apple or pear.

My mid day meal is usually in camp. It will be my main one for the day. Sometimes it is a regular lunch, or even a granola, jerky and some cookies or junk in a tree, but not too often.

PB&J with pre cook bacon on soft shell tortilla all day every day. I added bacon last year what a bonus. With a apple, granola bars and a couple of fun sized candy bars. The key is how to role the soft shell so jelly isn't all over the place.

I pack pb and honey in a tortilla. By the end of the season I hate it, but it is light and doesn't take up too much room to pack quite a few of them into my bear bag for the trip.

Flour tortilla, Peanut butter, honey and 2 slices of bacon. I make several up before I go and vacuum seal them. I also take homemade nut bars for a snack and jerky.

I like the apple idea. I may just pack in a few days worth.

Started getting my wrap ingredients around last night and remembered another one. Tortilla, pizza sauce, peperoni, and cheese. Just like the PBB's only Italian style. Yes it is all in how ya fold em. At my house they are called "fold, fold, fold, and wraps". Not sure where the name comes from, but delicious for lunch on the side of a mountain.

That actually sounds really good.. Care to elaborate on your folding technique? power-point presentation would be preferable, but whatever you can offer...

Well lets see. Fold fold fold and wrap. Lay the flour tortilla out on the counter. Spread on the desired amount of pizza sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Fold the right side of the tortilla toward the center approximately 1.5 inch fold. Then fold the left side of the tortilla shell toward the center approximately 1.5 inch fold. Then fold the bottom of the tortilla shell toward the center approximately 1.5inch fold. Grab the bottom fold and wrap it all the way to the top.

I'll try to post some pics this week, power point is a little out of my comfort level.

Well as you know Phantom I prefer lobster. But in a pinch I'll take elk jerky, trail mix, non-smashable fruit, chips, granolas (not the people the bars). I've done my share of sammiches over the years and after they get compressed and beat up they aren't so appealing. I've brought too many back to camp to keep taking them. But once in awhile I still take a roast beef.

Hmm, I've heard from good sources that you just eat grasshoppers, salmon flies, brook trout heads, whole crawdads, and pollywogs from elk wallows while out hunting. Just what I heard ;)
