Mule Deer/Elk

Postby TurkeyBowMaster » 08 08, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Probably going to end up with a combo again this year. Would it be best to designate days to specificly hunt mule deer or just opportunity hunt them while chasing elk. Elk are the priority!

Did you get a deer tag? What season(s) are you hunting?

I hunt both the same day. Mulies are still out when the elk have bedded.

For what state? Montana deer/elk combos are sold out if that's what you're referring to.

I have a deer tag with me, but still I just hunt elk until I fill that tag. I will usually shoot a buck if one comes along, but don't hunt them when I am out for elk. I don't think it matters where or when you are hunting. Focus on what you are after. If you are primarily hunting elk, don't give them a minutes slack until you have what you came for.

^^ Agree with this philosophy ^^. During archery elk season, the bucks aren't too available anyway... best to hunt them during November ;)

Any more,I hunt deer in a different season than elk.Gives men more time in the field. If I am hunting elk, deer are the last thing on my mind. In the past,if I had a deer tag in my pocket,I might have shot one while riding back to camp

I have a deer tag along with my elk tag for Idaho and even though I have shot a Mule deer each of the last 2 years', I have encountered both of them while elk hunting and would not target a mule deer, unless I have notched my elk tag already, it is more or less an opportunity tag for me, as I would never want to miss an opportunity at harvesting a trophy Muley buck, if I happen to cross paths' with one while elk hunting.

Yea, Montana. Hopefully get a leftover tag soon. The answers are about like I was thinking. I just thought I might go higher for mule deer and see what happens for a day or two.
