Trail Mix/Snacks for your daypack

Postby lamrith » 08 04, 2016 •  [Post 1]

There was a thread I saw some folks talking about power drinks they use, but fluids only go so far when you are burning calories dogging the herd.

What are all of you folks out there using as your go to food load out on your day hunts? Some people and junk foodies, some twigs and berries, some DIY, some all prepackaged.

Lets hear what you do to stay fueled up thru the day. I have found scouting trips are a great way to field test not only gear but those little things like food and water load outs as well, lets share some ideas so we can all try different things out in this last month of scouting and be ready to rock come opening day!

I make my own trail mix. I put shelled sunflower seeds, m & m's, jr ments, and nibs... And whatever else I feel like that trip.... I'm kinda in the junky side of food :D . I do like a green apple in my pack too. I eat it really early so I'm not packing it

I'm walking an hour before sunrise. Out all day, back after sunset. I eat a banana on the hike in. I carry an apple, maybe some jerky, and a bag of my own blend of trail mix. My mix will have banana chips, maybe dried mango and/or pineapple, sunflower seeds, peanuts, almonds, maybe soy nuts, maybe chocolate or peanut butter chips, maybe m&ms. I graze on the mix all day, usually have the apple for lunch. Plus I always have a power bar, clif, etc in my pack for emergency. And of course, plenty of H2O.

Unlikely. My wife is overly fond of Junior Mints, all I ever see is empty JM boxes. I'd never make it out of the house w them.

I am still dialing in my mix, making it myself for now, sort of a typical sweet-n-salty routine, 4 simple ingredients.
Salted Peanuts
Honey Nut Cherrios
M&M's
Yogurt covered Pretzels

1st try was yogurt covered and awesome, 2nd was pretzel nuggets and not as good so I am sticking with the yogurt covered. I find it makes a better balance and does not dry out your mouth requiring water to eat for extended periods. I know some people will add raisins and other fruits as well.

In terms of the rest of the day bag, I am copying Phantom's format of a days meals in a single qt Ziplock bag. Super easy when you get to camp at night to remove that days bag when you get to camp throw in a new one and you are done with prep for the next day.
1Quart bag:
1 ziploc sandwich bag of trail mix
1 Granola bar
1 protien bar (Clif bar, etc)
2 snack crackers (Toasted cheese, peanutbutter crackers etc)
I would like to have a candy bar in there, but early season Archery is usually hot and they just turn to goooo.

I totally get that - gets the best of me fishing too LOL - that's why I like the Nature Valley Protein bars - nearly as good as a candy bar but not quite LOL...

Very practical thread and I missed the thread about the quart bag thing - very smart Phantom :)

Cliff bars, trail mix (actually Walmart sells a lot of different kinds), and a Snickers. I like the Junior Mints idea, that sounds great. I still do the sandwich thing for lunch. It is vitally important if you do the sandwich thing to make sure it is squished to no more than 1/4" in thickness for proper nutrition though.

1 cup peanuts
1 cup walnuts
1 cup pecans
1 cup cashews
1 cup crasians

Put the nuts/crasians in a large bowl and put them in the oven on warm for 1 hr. Mix in 1 cup of melted peanut butter. Stir until all the nuts are coated with peanut butter. Mix in 1 cup of protein powder. I used vanilla. Mix well.

I vacuum seal 3/4 cup of the mix into bags and refrigerate. They look just like a candy bar.

Dude,
You got some killer ideas there! How does the PB do once it gets warmed back up being in bag all day? Does the protien powder help crust it up a bit?

The peanut butter stays pretty solid until afternoon when the temps warm up. Its a little gooey after it gets warm. The nuts have a pretty light coat of peanut butter so its manageable. I try and eat it right out of the package.

I added some chia seeds and flaxseeds to this batch.

I have always made my own trail mix or "gorp" as we call it. Then one day at work I got some stuff out of the snack machine called Kar's Nuts Sweet and Salty mix. It was almost identical to my concoction. I did a little on line checking, and found that I could get a case of 20 2oz pkgs ( about the exact size that I bag it up in) for $8 or $9 bucks from Sam's.
Ordered, done.
