Howdy! I am living in Castle Rock, CO. I have been elk hunting for 1/2 a year! This is my second season. I took a brief (40 year) break from hunting to get married, raise 2 kids, retire from my day job, etc. I love living in Colorado where the air is clean (except near the fires!), water tastes good and fish are big! Looking forward to hunting again this year!

I don't remember saying anything before, but welcome to the forum Novice. The decal looks cool on your bumper and will make you appear to be a leader of men. Well maybe. No one has come to that conclusion based on my bumper sticker, but I still keep it there.

To all of you new guys, and just sorta new; Ryan: Welcome. It is great to have you here in camp. I enjoy talking with elk hunters of all kinds; especially newer ones. My first idea for you is to hold closely onto your coffee mug around the campfire, and make sure Rory doesn't drop a rubber worm in it. If you have a good seat, where the smoke is not bothering you, stay seated as you will be landing in Indian Summer's lap when you try to sit back down. Those two are characters, but generally harmless.

For the record, I have "never" placed rubber worms in anybody's coffee. They are too easily detected and tend to melt if the beverage is too hot 8-) . I much prefer to surprise folks with a generous shot of bourbon in their morning coffee. Swede is right to mind your mug around our campfire though. You see, Swede doesn't use a tent when hunting/camping but instead racks out 30 feet up in his tree stand (yes, he loves those things). He takes great pleasure in flipping small pinecones down from high at unsuspecting campfire dwellers..... he's the one to watch closely ;)

I love reading all post and I'd like to try and give any advice on subjects I have knowledge on....this is definitely one of the most helpful forums I've ever been a part of....thanks to all those that share their wisdom and experiences!

Don't worry the pine cones are just a minor annoyance. I am sure glad Rory did not mention the fact (seriously) that I do not take a urine jug up in the tree with me. I relieve myself right from my stand. Maybe I should have noted on the tip #4 thread that you don't want to set up your tent too close to one of Swede's tree stands.

Welcome new members. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do ( even if I only check in from about July - October ) As you can see the regulars, and mods are a good group with a good sense of humor.
If we aren't new members where do we go to purchase one of these decals? My Jeep collects them, and it would be cool to throw a WT decal on there.

Hello, my name is Jonni. I've gone hunting all my life! I'm 53. But I've hunted on my own for 14 years. I started reading anything could get my hands on and internet too! 13 years ago at a gun club where I meet a man who took me under his wing, showing how to reload, shoot, I also in return sponsored his daughter who won the us Jr. Palma championship 3 times. I love hunting, sliping amoung animals Through the woods not being noticed is so exciting, seeing things no city person will ever see, Its not just hunting, the flower, trees, watch foxes play etc. That's why when I leave the woods its like I was never there! Its a passion that keeps me going back, if its hunting, picking chantrel mushrooms, or just seeing what's around the next ridge. I also have had horses all my life, love to hit the trails. Cooking and baking. I've been told I make the best soup? I hope I'll get the opportunity to meet one of you from this site. Happy hunting!
If you can't find me, I'm not lost. I'm hunting!

Shooter: There used to be several very capable female writer-hunters. I always enjoyed their stories because they were much more than killing a buck or bull. Everything they experienced was a part of their hunt. The scent of pine, sage or juniper. The rock under their sleeping bag, a chattering squirrel, etc., etc, The wind and a driving snow were described well enough that the reader was brought along and experienced it with them.
I do not know what ever happened to them. At least some magazines limit the writer to so few words and space, that that there is little room for them to share anything beyond the chase itself. Go ahead and tell us about your experiences in the forest. I am sure there is much joy, some pain and sorrow, some frustration and always so much more just taking in the sights and sounds of the outdoors.

Howdy - like some others I've been a member for a few months. I am 43 and I have lived in Colorado Springs mostly since 1990, hailing originally from Michigan. I have hunted whitetail but never Elk or Mule deer. I've been an active member of the Pikes Peak Chapter of the RMEF and this year was able to get in with some great guys to participate in their Elk Camp 2nd rifle season in Colorado. Needless to say I am really excited!!

I enjoy the site and though I don't contribute much for Elk tactics I appreciate being a member. I enjoy reading the posts and hope some of the info I gleaned will be helpful. I enjoy mostly that this is a pretty drama free forum. I like how the forum is managed and it's members. I'm looking forward to being able to share my experiences about Elk hunting and will continue to contribute here - where and how I can.

Now if I could just meet a great woman like lilshootergirl that likes to hunt (and fish) Colorado, I think I would be pretty dang happy....

Howdy!, my name is ben and have been on a lot of forums but recently joined this one per some recommendations. I am headed to MT this year for my first elk hunt and I leave in 34 days! Can not wait to see the country, see elk, and hopefully get a chance to taste some fine elk meat (never had it in the past).

I'm typically a lurker and don't post much but liked the idea of this thread!

Thanks

Hi everyone,

Just a quick post to introduce myself and hopefully get one of the rare WT decals for my truck..About my 5th yr of 'serious' archery elk hunting and we've got elk 2 of the last 3 yrs...hunt exclusively in WA state as of right now, but would love to expand that to ID (have family there) and OR (also have lots of family there).

Really hopeful to put an elk down opening week this year, and will post up pics from time to time for your viewing pleasure.

thanks for running such a great site Rory!

TBM here from Alabama...taking turkey tactics to the elk mountains for the second time. Hopefully can capture some good pics for a future article. It is fun seeing if my turkey skills translate to elk. It's been a short learning curve so far and this year will should go a long ways toward proving my theory. Lots of extra motivation for me to succeed and lots to prove.

Postby Arik » 08 30, 2016 •  [Post 30]

Hello everyone, I'm Arik Swindlehurst. I've rifle hunted elk for roughly 12 years, but had to give it up for a time. Now I'm taking my 15 year old son on our first archery hunt this year. I joined the forum to gather as much information as possible since I'm new to bowhunting and I feel responsible to do justice to the elk and other animals we hunt. I've known too many in years past who would bowhunt when they couldn't get rifle tags and did a half-assed job of it, taking poor shots (among other things), and vowed not to do that myself. Besides that, I'm really enjoying learning to shoot my bow well and watching my son's growth as well. So while this is my first time afield with my bow, I'm going with others that have experience to teach my son and I, and have devoted myself to being proficient with it. I greatly enjoy the conversation and look forward to learning opportunities to come.

Tagged a cow before . Hopefully this will be my year!!!!! I'm a avid Texas hill country hunter " well my kids are " I let them shoot all the good bucks".... I do a lot of fishing " well my kids do". I do a lot of baiting and taking fish off the hooks.... I would like a decal to put on my truck. " if my boys don't put it on there go cart first ". Haha.

Howdy, I apparently joined last year and promptly forgot about it. I have updated my profile and would like a decal if they are still available.

I am 73 years old and still an avid elk hunter. I took my first elk in Colorado in the fall of 1963 and have been hooked on elk ever since. I live in the Boot Heel of New Mexico, but still mostly hunt Colorado because I can get a private land tag there every year. I moved to New Mexico in 1992 and have applied every year since. I have drawn exactly 4 tags in 24 years. I admit that I apply for the primo units (again, mostly because I am guaranteed a tag in Colorado).

I am a retired wildlife/conservation biologist and I still work with several nonprofits engaged in hunting, fishing, wildlife conservation and land management. I serve on the board of the New Mexico Wildlife Federation and I am a life member of RMEF.

I plan on moving back to Idaho when I retire and really like the McCall area. So let me know if anyone has info on living there.

Wow! I just picked up a cup of coffee and noticed, not only is my seat taken, but there are several new members at the campfire. It is good to have you all here. I guess while I am standing at the back I will keep my eye pealed for RJ's wood block. It is not the best, but he has a way of locating himself where the smoke is no problem. I will attach myself to it as soon as he goes for another cup or a brush run. In the mean time just join right in the conversation, and while you are at it try to stump Indian Summer with a tough question.

I've been ruined since. I think about Elk hunting all the time and always trying to plan my next trip. I've been fortunate to take most of those trips with my dad and we're set for Archery 2017 now.

Welcome Steve to the W.T. campfire. It is good to have your here. How have you and your dad been doing on your elk hunts?
I can relate to your dreaming about the next hunt. I am often plotting against those  critters. They sure seem to get a good laugh out of teaching me a trick or two that I have not already experienced. Their bag of new tricks must be running on empty now, as I have been after them so many years. Anyway; welcome and join in the conversations here.

Yep, welcome to our hunting camp Steve. Would love to hear about some of your hunts over the last handful of years. Sent you a PM; respond when you get a minute and I'll shoot one of the coveted WT deals your way :D

We've been handed our hats several times but we've had a good bit of success. Dad killed a cow on our first hunt which was rifle in 2005, I killed a raghorn 5x5 in 2009, but it was all worth while when dad killed his best in 2013 with a crossbow (i'll start a thread and post some pics). Our 2015 hunt was a great hunt but all 3 of us came up short but each had multiple opportunities. This has all fueled my addiction.
