Load for new muzzleloader?

Updated my arsenal for this year's ML hunt in CO. New piece is CVA Optima w 209 breechplug. I plan to shoot up my remaining 777 powder this year, before switching to BH next year. Interested in suggestions for elk load under CO restrictions: open sight rule means max range of 120 yds, no sabots so full-bore bullets. Any help appreciated, hoping to start shooting this weekend.

Check out the Thor all copper Ballistic Tip conical bullets. Call them and they will send you a sampler kit to get the precise diameter best for your individual barrel. You want the diameter that goes down tight but not super tight.

I have no experience with triple seven, but I use 110 grains of BH 209 with good patterns.

The Hornady® .50-Caliber FPB Black-Powder Bullet with Flex Tip Technology would be my second choice but are more readily available in the major outlets.

Thanks, Jim. Got some 300 gr FPBs, thinking I'll start w 100 gr of 777, fired by CCI 209 primers. Waiting for a Williams ghost ring rear sight to arrive.

I replaced my factory sights with a Williams peep sight in the rear and an ultra-fine cross hair globe sight on the front. Love it, but hard to see the crosshairs in very low light.

First, throw the 777 out. It has probably degraded from last year if it was opened. I can't use BH 209 in my ML , but I am a big fan of the 348 gr Powerbelts or even the 295's for elk. I went back to FFG black powder, it goes bang every time I pull the trigger and is about 1/2 the price of BH 209 if I were using it . I load wth 100 grains of BP.I have killed more than few elk with that load.

Thanks to you both. I am still waiting for one mounting screw from the sight manufacturer. Then I can mount the ghost ring sight and start testing loads.
