Oregon Wenaha Tag

Hi all I have drawn the premium Oregon Wenaha Tag for 2016 which looks like I can hunt through all the seasons with the weapon of my choice. I am pretty much strictly an Archery hunter. I have not hunted that area since the early 90s. Back then we spent a lot of our effort dropping into the wilderness and back out each day. I was wondering if anyone was willing to give me any updates about the area and was also looking for recommendations for packers in the area for meat pack out (not as young an dumb as I used to be). Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know anything about the unit just want to say congrats on the tag. You should buy a lottery ticket aswell!

The other thing I can't believe is that I also had 20 points for the draw which should have got me the reg non res Wenaha tag for the Archery season and just on a whim I put in one app for the premium Wenaha Tag which was new this year and ended up drawing that which now bumps my points up to 21 on the reg draw as the premium tag does not use points

The problem you have, and it' a good problem to have, is that not many have the opportunity to hunt that unit. The number of quality elk hunters who have drawn that tag, is even going to be a smaller number. If I knew, or knew of anyone who could help you I would, but the only help I can give is to learn methods from here on this forum, for calling in herd bulls. Congratulations on the great tag, and go get a monster

Welcome to the forum Wapitiric. If you live near Springfield, you could go and ask the owner of the BOW Rack some questions. Otherwise you may call him. He hunted the unit a few years ago. I think he had a packer take him back into the wilderness. Good luck on your hunt.

Hey guys thanks for all the congrats. I have talked to the biologist for the area and sounds like most the places I hunted there in the late 80's early 90's are still good areas. I have tons of time since I am retired my biggest issue is the meat pack out, I wish I wouldn't have sold my Llamas a few years back. As it stands now I am planning on camping at the trailheads and dropping in and setting up a small spike camp to run 3 or 4 day hunts from. hopefully I can get my hunting buds scheduled so I have someone to help most of the time. Still trying to find a meat packer for the area as myself and most of my hunting partners are all over 60 ( That's how long I have been trying to get the tag ) and all the pack out in the past have taken a toll on us. I plan on making contact with the Bow Rack owner and I know our local shop in Medford (Dewclaw ) had someone that has hunted the area not to long ago. I am so pumped about the tag I haven't been able to sleep (Elk in my head). I am not great on the computer but I will try to keep you all posted on my progress.
