Elk101.com??

Postby Chaza402 » 06 15, 2016 •  [Post 1]

Just wondering if anyone out there has purchased the online version of this product. Been hunting elk for 7 years now and I am always looking for more information on these beasts of burden and I was wondering of this product is all it's cracked up to be. Onxmaps sent out a pretty good discount today which peaked my interest a bit.

I signed up for Elk Hunting University and it was money well spent. I watched everything last week. Combine that along with the helpful scenario's that are posted on this forum and I feel like I'm gaining valuable experience before I hit the mountains.

I have not purchased the Elk 101 stuff, but have believed for a long time that the more you can learn at home, the better prepared for the hunt time you will be. Most of us cannot spend near enough time in the elk woods to learn the game all first hand. I probably had a better opportunity to learn in the forest than 99% of hunters, but still had major gaps in my understanding of how elk communicate and react. I am indebted to many people for the information they have shared and am a better hunter today because of books, magazine articles, video/dvd and forums like this.
There is one note of caution I would give to readers here or anywhere else the go for information. None of us have sufficient experience to know how everything works. We can get enough to be able to succeed at hunting. Still we extrapolate and interpolate beyond what we can be sure of. The best way to inform yourself is to go with a broad range of sources. When we are paying over $1,000 for a hunt, a $20 investment in a book or dvd to educate ourselves is insignificant.
One other point and I will shut up: There are quite a few very experienced elk hunters including an outfitter that hang out on this forum. Elknut is an excellent resource. He sells books and dvds for easy reference. I sell a book, but there is nothing I am aware of in either Elknut's material that is for sale, or mine that you cannot get for free if you are willing to do some research on this forum or just ask.

I am sure there is at least some good information that Corey Jacobson has put together, but I don't want to confuse styles. I am on this forum, because I believe in the Elknut methods. I have learned all I can by listening to the DVD's over, and over, conversations I've had with Paul, his seminars, and recently the Podcast. I have found NOTHING, in the Elknut methods in the elk woods in September that wasn't true, or given the right scenario hasn't worked. I, myself, do not want to confuse myself, learning another set of strategies, :D my brain only has so much capacity. I will not be purchasing anything from any source other than here. Some might say I am restricting myself, but I am so confident in the knowledge I have attained, and I am one of the 90% group, and I average 10 plus bulls called in every year now, on OTC, public ground hunting. If one takes the time to learn the methods, that most of us use, it just works, and as Swede said, most of it is discussed, or just asking a question, you will get answers here.

I HAVE IT AND HAVE NOT GOTTEN TO FAR INTO IT BUT THE KNOWLEDGE THERE IS WORTH EVERY PENNY....
I also have elknuts stuff but there is always more than one way to skin a cat and the diversity of topics Corey covers is very comprehensive. Plus there is some great discount codes that come along with the package so in the end it may be money well spent in multiple ways.
I encourage everyone to check it out. Its an easy one stop shop to reference a particular subject again before the big hunt!

Chris, I think it's a very good idea for hunters to take advantage of everything they can to be the best hunters they can be! That's what this site is about as well as others like it! Can you share something that you've learned with your new info that hasn't been talked about that will increase our odds as hunters too! Thanks bud!

Sounds like a deal to me....I mean there is probably at least 30 years of experience packed into the package. Still, there is the temptation to just keep transferring the knowledge I have from hunting turkey and varmits into the mountain's and see if that keeps working, plus I learned a couple of things from the elk on my first hunt that I can't wait to try. It's nothing like anything I've seen on tv or read about.

It is something I have not seen other hunters take to the level that I encountered. I want to duplicate it while cold calling and see if it fires up elk like it did that day. If it does I might share it later. It just doesn't sound like anything a normal hunter would do on purpose.

Might not work but it did once.

TurkeyBowMaster, are you one of those guys that don't share info because you feel if you do someone may know what you know & they may kill your elk? If so that's pretty sad! You've been here long enough we don't share those sentiments! I seriously doubt you've come across anything some of us here do not already use! (grin) You just haven't come across it yet! This has definitely tipped the scales. I agree with everyone that information- whether it's discovered in the field, on forums, or wherever is more knowledge of animals habits that help when trying to decide our next choice of action. I grew up chasing gobblers, waterfowl, and whitetails in the south and all I can say is elk( while alike in many ways) are a totally different Animal all together! I've learned a ton from this and other forums as well as Paul's intricate knowledge of these beasts which finally put a really nice bull in my freezer last year. I am one who believes that information is the key to success and I just can't get enough of it when it comes to elk!! But then again once you stop learning you start dying.

Coming from a relatively new Elk hunter, but a research junky and someone who tends to over-prepare:

So far the content is very good, very very well organized and well done with lots of videos, but I don't feel it's all that different than what I learned from Elknut and this forum as well as other places, although there's a lot to be said for a resource that can put a lot of knowledge in one place in a clear and simple format.

Corey Jacobsen is a world champion elk caller, but as compared to Elknut (and someone like Chris Roe) tends to have a more simple approach to calling. His favorite tactic I've heard him talk about multiple times - He covers ground location bugling until he gets a bull to respond, tries to work in close with some cow calls, and then when the bull sounds off, bugles over the top of him with a challenge bugle. Now of course, that's not his only approach, but he seems overall to focus less on the distinction between what you're saying, and more on the "how" and fewer scenarios if that makes sense?

But, the course isn't all about calling. The Elk101 "University of Elk Hunting" has 14 Modules - Planning, Scouting, Physical Conditioning, Elk Hunting Gear, Using Elk Calls, Elk Hunting Knowledge, Locating Elk, Setting up on Elk, Calling Elk, Miscellaneous Strategies, Common Challenges, Tracking and Blood Trailing, Field Care of Meat, Packing your Elk.

I really enjoy looking at / listening to the different approaches of all sorts of successful elk hunters. I think Paul/Elknut, Elk101/Corey Jacobsen, Chris Roe/Roe Hunting Resources, Jason Phelps, Aron Snyder to name a few (plus experienced hunters on a forum like this) give you a lot of different things to learn from... In fact, I need to go back through and re-listen to and re-read all of it again as part of my prep for this year.

Exactly. Corey is a pretty successful elk hunter (and obviously an amazing caller), but I'm not a huge fan of his method. Phelps has a similar method. Don't get me wrong, it works in many situations, but I don't believe it's as high percentage as other methods. Especially on herd bulls. I also feel like Corey underestimates the importance of using a variety of sounds and interpreting bull sounds.

I guess my opinion on it is - it's one and the same as some of the tactics that Elknut uses/advocates, but people like Corey and Phelps rely on it more heavily or more exclusively and use a more "simple" approach if that makes sense? And both of them are some of the best pure "callers" out there.

If you haven't listened to Chris Roe / Roe Hunting Resources - I'd recommend it. He also takes a very scientific approach and very detailed approach as well (even moreso than Elknut), but tends to rely more heavily on cow calling. His background is hunting high pressured places in Colorado where he is frequently dealing with pressure from other hunters in the same drainage. Slightly different approach than Elknut, but educational and interesting to compare the two. (Personal note, where I hunt, I still lean towards Elknut's style and what's covered in places like the playbook)

He also has some VERY good content on Elk biology and timing of the rut... Video quality is top notch and easy to follow, but when it comes to listening to the elk vocalizations, I think Paul has better sound recordings.

And, here's a good video of two different approaches - Aron Snyder and Chris Roe together:

I got the course and as many have said, found it to be very useful and informative. I still use all of Elknuts DVDs and Sound By The Elk CD to prepare myself for calling and sequences. However, I find the tactics, day in the life of an elk, and wind/thermal discussions in the University very easy to follow and understand. I don't see a disadvantage to learning and observing from other accomplished elk hunters even if their methods are not for you. For example, I'm not going to go on a 7-10 day backcountry hunt like Aron Snyder, but I'm going to listen to what he has to say about what he takes with him to see if I can learn something. I'm glad I got Corey's course when I did for $50. I consider it very well spent.

Good stuff guys! No doubt we can all learn from one another, there's no "one way" to hunt elk with so many varying situations that can arise. Certainly looking to ones who are successful elk hunters over a long period of time is a great way to focus ones endeavors. I believe one thing that separates our style from others is we do our best to be a successful elk hunter no matter the day we are there to hunt. This can be tougher at times as many can attest too especially when elk are more on the quiet side for 3-4 days & you only have a 6-10 day hunt. Focusing on still drawing elk to you or hunting destination spots or trails to these spots can prove to be very effective. Killing elk during these quiet times is easier said than done! (grin) We put a lot of focus on these tough times as well as others, I believe this truly separates us from others for the most part! All in all we can never know too much! (grin)

Brendan, not sure what you mean by your statement below bud? We hunt OTC Public Land DIY every year in heavily pressured units. We do not bivy hunt either. You can toss in countless wolves into that equation as well & we still put bulls down on a yearly basis. We tailor our calling to the encounter if calling is needed. Thanks!

Elknut - here's my perception, granted, this is as a customer of both and a relatively new elk hunter. From listening to Chris Roe describe it - it seems like another level of pressure from how I've heard you describe it. Here's what I mean by that - I've heard you say that you try to get away from other camps and other people so that with your calling you are not calling in other hunters (or perhaps disturbing them?) Hearing Chris talk about it he has talked about trailheads with 15-20 trucks, getting parked in at the end of the day so they can't leave, and people racing each other up the mountain trying to beat each other to a bull. Again - not "rules" and "always" scenarios, but the sense I got was that some of the pressure / hunter competition in the areas in Colorado he deals with were at a higher level, and that may lead him to rely more heavily on cow calling or different strategies? It's been since last summer that I listened to his material, I'll have to do it again shortly. I do think his material complements yours nicely and makes you think about what is the same, and what is different.

But at the end of the day - I don't think any of these approaches are all that different when you get down to it, I think it's just that certain people rely more heavily on some of the different techniques than others. And, as a newer Elk Hunter who's hunted Montana twice - the Elknut methods have worked well for me. Having only hunted Elk twice, I've (knowingly) called 5-10 bulls into shooting range and got lucky on one of them.

Hope that explains myself better...

As I see it, Elknut's calling regime is nuanced and sophisticated. It is laver on layer of things you can learn and apply based on differing scenarios and how they play out. Some other hunters have a simple one size fits all approach to calling. I have seen or read everything from Bigdan's approach, to bite and blow or squeeze the bulb. Now that takes simple to the max.
It might be helpful for some if Elknut came up with a level one hunter, level 2 two hunter ... directions so that beginners and intermediates were not intimidated by all of the complexities.
I think Rory tried that with the calling card. It can be a really useful tool for those that are starting out.
Don't consider yourself at a disadvantage if you have not figured everything out the first day in the elk woods.
I have made my own card that is modified (abbreviated) some for those I hunt with to have something to go on.

Hey Brendan, thanks for the response! I appreciate your input sir! Good luck to you this year!

swede, you make me laugh! That's a good thing! (grin) I thought the info shared was very easy & basic! (grin) As a caller of elk I'm sure I do take things for granted these days, it comes very natural for me anymore, not boring at all but with being in 100's of encounters we generally have a good idea & plan what we should do next. Some plans require no calling at all. Each situation can be different this is why we do not settle on one or two methods & hope they will work out & if they don't we don't tally it up to the elk just weren't interested that day! We know it's us if there is failure so we do our best to adapt to each situation. It has worked out well for us!

Slim, you bring up an excellent point about Public Land kills! I would enjoy knowing his success rate as well as Corey's over the last 25 years. This isn't about chest pounding but what is their actual experience with putting OTC Public Land Bulls down.

Excellent point. There is a difference as big as night and day when you are comparing some private land hunts with OTC public land hunts. Calling on some ranches amounts to just ringing the dinner bell near the barn and the elk come running. BTW: I'll bet Elknut does not carry a dinner bell with him for an elk call.
The butchering and the pack out are easy on those ranches too. Just get out of the way and wait for the ranch hand to come in with the tractor and the front-end bucket. The bulls have big antlers and great eating meat. I am just not old enough and my eyes are not dim enough, to look at myself in the mirror, if I went on one of those "hunts".

I learn from all styles. I did buy Corey's info for the $49. I thought he did a great job of scouting from afar for out of state hunts. The few tips I picked up from that were worth it. I didn't buy it for the calling, meat care, tags etc sections.

He definitely hunts public land but I am not sure his overall success rate. Put it this way there return trip to Wyoming in 2015 was labeled a redemption trip as they struck out the previous trip. I can relate to that!

As far as calling goes, I feel that Elknut provides more thorough info. Corey even admits that he can be a little hard headed in his approach.

Can never have enough info:)

I would have liked to get it, but I just couldn't spend the $49 to do it. For me, it isn't really a "whose system is better" but rather I think you could pick up certain things from a lot of people.

Personally, I am a firm believer in Elknut's system. I have turned a number of people on to it and they all like it too. But that doesn't mean there isn't a nugget of wisdom somewhere else as well. A great example of this is Chris Roe's Doorway Principle. I think that makes a lot of sense. But if you just stick with Elknut, you will be grilling elk backstraps quite often!

I have not been able to see or read the elk calling information put out by Elk101 but have been to 3 short seminars given by Cory. He did indeed describe an agressive method in which he finds a bull that is "ready to be called in" and gets in a position to challenge said bull. I think he does try to keep it simple but he openly admitts that this method ,which is similar to Elknuts "threat", is his favorite. Cory also said that he knows there are other ways to call bull elk but that this method is the most exciting to him. So Cory prefers challenging bulls over all other techniques. I'm assuming that the bulls that he is looking for have atleast one hot cow and he is putting that bull in a position where it can not back down. That bull that is being challenged, can not look weak in the eyes of his cows so he has to react by displaying his dominance and fight or run off the intruder. That said, I'm sure Cory has used other calling methods to kill elk and that some of those elk have been satalite bulls.
I also think that he may be trying to "keep it simple" to appeal to the new or less experienced hunter.

Now, about the Elknut system. Pauls system for calling elk on any given day, hot cows or not, amounts to one big and varied bag of tricks. As an experienced and successful elk hunter looking at the play book for the first time, back 6 years ago, I was somewhat overwhelmed by the amount of information presented. Over time, I was able to use some methods to call and harvest bulls and call in many others. As I started to see how well these methods worked, I dug deeper into the information and it all started to make sense. When a calling scenario works, you never forget the experience and can call on it in future setups when needed. Pauls system sets an elk hunter up to deal with any situation that may arise and some methods can even be used to up ones odds of calling only a herd bull or only a satalite bull. For our crew it now comes down to properly reading the situation and using elk sounds that fit the situation. Satalite bull or herd bull? Hot cows or not? Phase of the rut? It all becomes more and more automatic as you gain experience but I would recommend going back and reviewing the book and dvds because you will dredge up new information and see things differently over time. We listened to Pauls podcasts and actually heard a few new tidbits of information. Our crew is constantly talking about different scenarios from the past and hypothetical
scenarios that may come up on future setups. If I could pick only one source for elk hunting knowledge, I would buy all of Elknuts material, period.

My two cents and take it for what it's worth: every one of the elk slayers named brings a wealth of knowledge. But until you can take that person and put them in any unit in any state and they fill their tag time and again, there will be no perfect method. It's the same reason you don't see two pro golfers have the same swing, why every MLB player doesn't have the same setup and swing, and why every NFL QB doesn't throw it the same way. There is only so much science you can put into it. The elk aren't always going to cooperate. There is no perfect method and there is no perfect hunter. Learn as much as you can so that when the opportunity arises, you are as prepared as possible.

The bottom line is what works in elknuts area might not work in Chris Roe's area and what works in Chris's area might not work in Cory's area. Figure out what works for YOU and YOUR AREA and that's all that matters.

I would add that what may work for years can play out as hunting pressure and game management practices change. Be versatile or be prepared to move around.

I disagree with this. No offense. Elk are elk, no matter where they are. The trick is to figure out what the elk are doing and communicating, reading the situation, and responding appropriately. I just have to get better at interpreting the situation!

I just find it hard to believe hard hunted public land elk are the same as private land elk that rarely get hunted. Come and get it just doesn't cut it on public. You must rattle some pots and pans, let them smell the sauteed onions, smell the cornbread baking and then say come and get it. You are still using the same call but setting the table makes all the difference. That's what fired the big bull up that I encountered. It wasn't the bulging but the other sounds that got him fired up.

No offense taken. But if elk are elk no matter where they are, then one of the methods out there should work everywhere no matter what and that simply isn't the case.

I say elk sounds "language" have the same meaning to elk anywhere there are elk present. A popping grunt will work to stop an elk anywhere with a high level of reliability. A herd bull with a hot cow in his harem will tirelessly work to keep the right to breed her, anywhere there are elk. The elk sounds used to set a bull up for a challenge have the same meaning to all elk. I think there are certianly differences in where elk hang out in different areas but their language and sounds have the same meaning in "elk town".

Cohunter14-

You implied elk are different in different areas. Elk have the same needs and desires no matter where they are. There language is the same in every area. Corey's method would work in Paul's area if he found the right bull. It's my opinion, Paul has a better grasp on elk language then anyone I have ever talked to or read about. There are lots of people that kill elk every year and lots of people that are really good at it too. I believe Paul's methods can help in every situation, whereas, others's methods may be beneficial only in certain situations.

Elk adapt to different situations, especially calling, pretty quickly. Where I hunt the elk head for a ranch right at the start of the archery season. They stay there until the rancher and his friends start shooting at them in the rifle season. As you might guess; when the rifles start going off the elk will leave the ranchers fields. I have seen the elk run from excellent calling in archery season because they have learned to associate that kind of calling with hunters. Call in elk a few times and they see and/or smell humans, they soon learn not to come in.
Where I have been hunting I have observed over a hundred elk at a time going over to the ranch on the day before and on opening morning of archery season. I am satisfied they start seeing people scouting and driving all around and know that the hunters are back. These elk were daily on my trail cameras right up to the season opener. Elk are not necessarily the smartest critters in the woods, but they can associate bugling and cow calls with hunters, especially when the hunter goes running and gunning over hill and dale, through bedding and feeding grounds, squeezing their cow call and blowing on their elk bugle.
We have a lot of good resources out now on how to call. We need to also learn when to call, how much calling is productive, also where and when to lay off the calling. Contrary to some things I have read, you can call too much in many areas.

Swede-

I can't take credit for the statement above. Cohunter14 made it. I think every situation is different and a person needs to learn to read the situation and adapt. You can't employ the same tactics every time you go out to hunt. Each day is different. I believe Paul has the best methods for trying to understand and interpret elk language and how to respond to be successful. I am willing to bet, you have some of the best ideas on how to kill elk out of a stand.

No doubt Paul has the best instructional material on the market to aid hunters in understanding elk sounds and responding to them. What he has is impressive and I would not belittle him or his material in the least.
My point is that locating or calling in elk with a bugle/cow call is not a one size fits all proposition. Different places require different tactics.

Exactly. Which is why there are multiple people out there teaching different ways to call. If there was one method that worked everywhere, there would be no need for the different options.

I'd say different scenarios and situations require different tactics more so than different areas requiring different tactics. Elk will be elk especially while rutting. Like most here, we hunt otc public land with all the pressure from hunters and predators that goes with the terratory.
I initially purchased Elknuts playbook and sounds by the elk cd. My partner initially learned from the dvd set that was out about 6 years ago. We do have some differences in our "sound" because of the different material that we learned from. I would advise a new and aspiring elk hunter to first look at the 5 basic sounds dvd, playbook and sounds by the elk. There is a lot of information to process and then apply in the field. After a few seasons of experience then a hunter can start to get into the nitty gritty of all the methods that can be used. Twinkieman and I have hours long conversations going over past setups, failures and successes on elk hunts. We are still gleaning new information from Pauls available material as well as from recordings of Pauls seminars and podcasts. Don't forget all the info available right here on this forum. Bottom line is the meat and potatoes of our success is understanding what elk sounds mean then reading a situation so we can use the appropriate elk sounds and actions on our part to get close to elk for shot ops. A new hunter also has his work cut out for him learning to make realistic elk sounds with mouth reeds and external reed calls although making the right sound at the right time is more important than competition quality elk sounds. We are both confident that we can make any elk sound on demand and under pressure so it is second nature. The only sound that I use consistantly without a reed is the popping grunt and mine does not sound all that good but it still works very well and it was the last thing that numerous bulls ever heard.

I have suscribed to the Elk 101 Online Course.

I am making my way through all the material, but am only partially finished.

So far, the material is well organized, well presented, and comprehensive in scope. I am enjoying the mix between written material, and demonstrative videos - it is entertaining.

In particular, the section on shot placement and the section on field dressing the Elk are exceptional. I also learned to import GPS waypoints that I made on Goggle Earth, and put them on my GPS from a nice little video Corey put together. My only complaint to date, and it is minor, is that some of the advertising that is present undermines the integrity of some of the recommendations.

I like to get information from multiple sources, that way I can see what everyone agrees upon, and what differences in opinion are out there. That way, I can develop my own opinions on certain controversial elk hunting issues - like hunting bedding areas, and taking a Frontal shot with a bow.

I agree with Brendan. I have found the Elknut materials, the Elk 101 online course, and Roe Hunting Resources to be the three most helpful sources to speed the learning curve in Elk Hunting. All three are excellent, and offer a slightly different take on the same material.

The Elknut is a master of tactics and strategies. His bag of tricks is impressive and thought provoking. Chris Roe has a formal Biological Sciences backgrounds which is excellent. In particular, his concept of the "Doorway" for elk setups is spot on in my opinion. I also like his take on cow calling with and emphasis on the use of lost cow, assembly calls, and frustrated whines ( Estrus Buzz in Elknut language). Corey Jacobson at Elk101 is very likeable, tons of credibility with his calling accomplishments, and he has an Engineers organized mind that tends to simplify subjects rather than makes them more complex.

So yes, I recommend the Elk101 Online Course.

But if I could only have one source to learn Elk hunting - it would be Elknuts Playbook. Perhaps the audio CD version for listening in the car. It is amazing. You need to read it about 5 times to fully absorb all the information.

This is a really informative program. I purchased it a couple of weeks ago and I have been taking my time reading and watching the videos and I have actually learned quite a bit. The scouting part is extremely informative and the video on google earth and transferring points to your gps is something I never thought of.
I recommend it to anyone new or seasoned in the world of elk!
