New muzzle loaders ???

My wife wants to hunt late season muzzle loaders. She wants to be as high tech as Idaho law allows.
Im willing to sell some guns I havent shot in over 20 years to help "fund" the new set up.

What hould we be looking for????

for example, if this is a muzzleloader-only season. Look for "northwest" type rifles, which are Idaho-legal. Then put an aftermarket peep or ghost ring sight on in place of the fiber optic factory open sight. 50 cal is standard, 45 cal will recoil a bit less, but is not legal for elk.

Maybe Ill just save some money, and not buy a new gun. She can use the Thompson Center "Hawkins" and still sell some of the firearms I haven't used in years

Muzzleloaders do not require FFL transfer, so you can sell them directly to buyers via online classifieds like Armslist. Get a box from your LGS, take the barrel out of the stock, box it up, tell the Post Office or other shipper it contains machined metal parts.

Your old Hawken will probably shoot as well as an inline if: You have a hot cap and nipple, you shoot 777 or modern propellant that doesn't absorb water like FFG, and you keep you cap and powder dry. Start w a fresh load every morning.

I am not familiar with Idaho regulations regarding muzzleloaders, and this will be critical to research this before you get her anything.

A "modern" muzzleloader would be .50 cal, use a 209 shotgun primer, burn Blackhorn 209 black powder substitue, have a tool less removable breech plug, shoot a saboted bullet through a high quality rifled barrel, and have a nice scope.

Every state has their own restrictions/allowances. I would get as many of these features as you are allowed.

You should be able to get a brand new dream muzzleloader for 700 or less. I would not be afraid to buy used as there is not much to break or wear out.
