Proper Intro

Hey fellas! Wanted to take a minute and introduce myself as I am new to the forum, hope this is the right area. My name is Brandon, 33 years old living in SW WA with my lovely wife and 2 year old daughter. I am an archery elk hunter who usually stays close to home (within WA) but last year did venture out of state to ID (going back this year!). I have had success in the field but feel that it is more about being with family/friends and experiencing the places hunting can take you opposed to the harvest, although it is nice not to eat tag soup and have a freezer full of delicious meat. I am no expert caller, scout, hunter, archer, tracker or elk sage rather just a guy who loves to hunt and knows what works best for me. I hope I can share some of my stories with the group that will help others fill their tags come elk season and gain some insight to help me as well. Cheers and I look forward to the interactions.

Are you anywhere near Toledo, Rosburg or Naselle? I know a few really good spots down there.

I'd like to catch a few monster sturgeon over there in the Columbia. A guy I knew said they come in from the ocean and are 15 foot plus. Sounds like fun fishing to me as long as it doesn't rain. It doesn't rain much over there does it?

Hey fellas! Thanks for the warm welcome. Some answers to your questions:

Lefty, I live in Vancouver, WA located right on the mighty Columbia, I am sure you know it well having resided there for 5 years!

Indian Summer, to answer your question I am a few hours or less from the mentioned cities. I harvested a bull out of Naselle last season during our late archery hunt in the coastal jungle. Small raghorn 5x5 Rosie but I was elated to get him during a tough time of year. I will share this story later in a different thread I suppose with some pics. Yes it rains, in buckets at times. Fishing for oversize Sturgeon is a blast when it is open, such an archaic fish (I will admit I am not much of an angler anymore).

Swede, I know exactly where that is, I work in North Portland at a steel mill and half of my work buddies are from Columbia County (St. Helens, Goble, Deer Island etc). I have shot the 3D range at Bushman's, utilized Cory at xXx Archery in Rainier and have tagged along with friends in the Saddle Mountain unit during Oregon's archery season.

I look forward to getting to know the group better on the forums. Whatever I can add to the already overflowing river of elk knowledge here is my intent. Honestly, it is a little intimidating coming in fresh to an already very well established site and member pool, here goes nothing!

BMG, you have been through Warren. You passed it on the way to St. Helens. There is a sign that says Warren as you head north, and from that sign you can see the back side of the other sign, across highway 30, saying the same thing for those heading south. I guess they are 100-200 yards apart.
I am not ready for September, but am getting there. If it was only a week away I would need to hurry up as I need to practice some more with my bow, and I still have a week long scouting trip I want to go on. But I am ready.

We built some nice homes along the Columbia
We lived just off of 45thAV and 99th,.. St Johns, Hazel Dell,wow has that place changed

Indian Summer I hooked a few of those monsters near Beacon Rock, The fun is over after about an hour. I wasnt using heavy weight saltwater gear and couldnt keep them close to the boat. Twice, I had to give up,ended up cutting fish off after 1 hour and 45 minutes,.. exhausted legs and arms. I never landed one over 7 foot.

I use to watch the pro"s at Bonniville dam, They had a real system , nails driven through 1lb drop sinkers, and a small gooey-duck clam for bait. One fellow would walk the line out a couple hundred yards. Then spooled in line with water dumping over the line. One fellow would cast,.. what an art. Once hooked they took turns bringing in those huge hogs.
We use to watch the big sturgeon breach during the shad run,.. Just so prehistoric
Fighting a big sturgeon should be on every mans bucket-list

"BMGinthePNW" Share some of of the other outdoor stories from the region,, I took some cattle man from Nevada fishing and crabbing at bouy 10. Never seen guys have so much fun puking their guts out.
Had the scouts out on my old boat,,, 11 limits of 6 crab stuffed in two pots, and had to dump the rest
