Back issue may change plans

Postby js80138 » 06 06, 2016 •  [Post 1]

In preperation for the 2016 season I have kept to my word by practicing my calls dutifully, GE for online scouting, checked gear for all weather Sept hunting. One lingering thought keeps creeping up. My back surgery failed. I had my second microdisectomy last July, seven years prior I had my right side done, L5. 2015 I was able to hunt archery and then again 4th rifle. I felt great even up to this past April. In the past month I feel more pain than I did before my surgery. I have a big summer planned with the family and then hunting season will begin. I do not anticpate having surgery until after hunting season in November. So now I must address how I will hunt.

The only hunting I know is to spot and stalk. I can make a go of it but what I do not know is how effective sitting on a trail or meadow will be should I be forced to go that route. Is there anything wrong with hiking as much as I am able and then pulling my tripod chair out for long periods of time. My thought is that I need to get up and scout the area to test my resolve. Maybe this post is just me speaking to myself as the answer is there but any advice would be appreciated. BTW I hunt in Colorado beween Kremmling and Steamboat usually 7200 to 10200 elevation.

All the Best,

Jimmy

Similar problem here, coupled with old age and a few other maladies. I don't walk more than a mile now. I sit a lot more, but I'm still killing elk.You can sit home and hurt or go elk hunting and hurt the same amount. Personal choice. I take some books along and read as I sit to help pass the time.

You might worry more about how you will be able to field dress and get the elk back to your truck.

I am sorry about your back situation. I know that has to be painful in more ways than one. If you know the right spot ambushing elk can be productive. I might try a tree stand even in rifle season, in the right situation. Just make sure you have someone to help pack out.

Had that same surgery at the end of last season. Bad pain started right at the beginning of archery season. My pain didn't let me sit, so I kept moving all the time. Packed a small elk out for my wife and had surgery 4 days later. Like saddlesore said, pain either way. Go hunt.

Your location is spectacular. We spent 5 days in the Flat Tops last July. Amazing elk country. Great fishing.
