Unit 61 Colorado

After 12 years of waiting I finally drew my Unit 61 first season bull tag. I have never been to the unit but have read a lot about it and hear good things (Im hoping the 12 year wait will be worth it). I am planning on going to scout the land a couple of times over the summer but need to get a few maps of the unit to make a plan for that. Do any of you have a suggestion as to what maps are good or areas to scout? Any info will help.

Awesome thanks guys. I have read a lot of the threads on this site and noticed that there are a lot of knowledgeable people with great stories about past experiences. Finally got lucky enough to draw so I figured I would seek out some help. Ill have to head up to Colorado Springs this weekend and see what they have. I live in Pueblo so it is only about a 30 minute drive . Have any of you hunted in 61 or spent anytime there with friends or family?

By clicking around you can go to any GMU, view all motorized routes on Nat'l forest, all public/private land, summer and winter ranges by species, campgrounds, trails, water, topos, satellite pics. U R almost up to 3 posts, then you can get PMs from those in the know RE 61. Most won't post specific info on the public forums, feel more free to share info via PM.

Congrats on the Unit 61 draw. I've got 11 points as a NR and I've been accumulating them all along with a unit 61 bowhunt in mind. With point creep, I'm still probably 15 years away :-/ I've hunted across divide road in unit 62 during archery season, some nice country up there.

Thanks Mitch. I'm planning on working hard and dedicating a lot of time to make it a great hunt and would love to share information about the unit once the hunt is over. I'm sure this will be the only time I get to hunt in 61 because the long wait has been a torture for me.

Congrats on great tag. Someone said this was one of the elkiest spot on the web, true, and unit 61 is one of the elkiest spots in the woods.
My advice is do a general scout to get a feel for the area and then pick one portion of the unit you like and get to know it. It's too big to try and hunt all of it and you won't have to go far to find elk. They are everywhere and a lot more move in from 62 after the seasons start.
You will have great time and get into bulls just about every day.

Thanks Brun, I can't describe how excited I am for it. I feel like the people around me are already tired of hearing about it with five months left before the hunt. As far as scouting goes what are your thoughts? Should I be looking for specific bulls throughout the summer or more of and area that I would like to hunt? There are obviously archery and muzzleloader seasons before my season so what is the likeliness of finding a good bull in July and August and it still being in the same area come October?
