2016 Elking Plans

So, what are your current plans for this year? I'm talking about the where and when's. I'll probably do a 4/5 day hunt in the early WA season and the last two weeks of elktember in the Gem State. How about you cats?

Depends on the draw. I hope to start hunting October 31 in Wyoming on the south end of the Bighorns. Good hunting and potential for big bulls but I need some snow to move the elk into the area. I'm not used to that.

if I don't draw that then maybe my 2nd choice which is the Wyo General elk license. I'd be excited to get back to old spots where I'm super confident.

But if I don't draw either which is very possible then I think I'll go all out for a giant mule deer and hunt the entire 2 week season from September 15 to 30. That means living like a marmot in the high country with horses feeding in meadows and glassing for days and days from high vantage points above timberline. If I do that I'll be seeing my share of nice bulls bugling up high which will be fun but disappointing since I can't hunt them.

That's ok there's always next year. I'm looking forward to seeing what I think about hunting elk like that anyway. Eastman style way up high in the rocky crags.

I know one thing I did not hunt elk last year which is insane so I am really chomping at the bit to do it this year.

Probably try some bivy hunting in Sept on the west edge of CO, a cow tag w rifle to assure the freezer fills, may cash in my points for a lifetime buck hunt in Nov. Hopefully test the bivy setup on overnight scouting trips throughout the summer.

I am not exactly sure where I will go, but I love eastern Oregon in September. If the Lord is willing, I plan to head out on August 22 and stay until I get er done, or run out of season.

Planning on 2nd week of Sept. (12th) in Co. for a solo backpack in familiar area with a new area in mind for a back-up just in case. This will also be my first solo as well.

We have my wife and two daughters will put in for bull moose. Ill put in for cow moose. Sept - Thanksgiving.
My wife says she wants to hunt October rifle elk and maybe my youngest daughter
Ill hunt archery every Friday night and all day Saturday and maybe a couple Mondays. I m lowering my expectations,.. to maybe the first bull ,
I have a farm; where if the potatoes get out early enough, weekdays after school, my daughter and I will take turns hunting the pop-up blind for deer.

Heading to Montana for my first time. A buddy and I will be archery hunting September 16th through the 28th. Hopefully I can get the monkey off my back and shoot my first branched bull. My home state all depends on if I draw a multi season tag or not.

Probably hunting local in the Panhandle, but always hopeful to go to the other Idaho with friends. I work 3 13s so it's tough to justify the time off work to go to the other end of the state when I can get into elk here without having to take time off and would end up with more days in the field. But there's nothing like elk camp with a good group of friends. Decisions, decisions, what a terrible problem to have.

Southern WY if we draw the general tag with 1 pp. If not, then MT and we have a couple of very tentative places to go. Basically starting from scratch in MT, but we want to go somewhere! Possibly CO I guess if we could come up with an OTC place to try.

Will be Montana again. EIther the second or third week of Sept. Leaning toward the third week.

Since I had to turn in my tag last year due to a death in the family I will start building points back up for ML in southern Colorado. Probably do ML first choice and first rifle second and end up archery in late September. Looking at a new location not so far in. We have been packing in about 3 and a half hours and hunting further in. This year I'm going to try to hunt from the truck and just ride in an hour or so. Hopefully this won't be as physical as the pack trip. Wearing an old man down.

Indian Summer, how can you think there is a chance to draw a general tag in WY as a 2nd chance.....special draw?

Yes there is definitely a chance. The odds you see online are not the total picture. The odds of drawing as a 2nd pick are definitely down but there's a chance for sure. I have GEN as my 2nd pick and have hope that if I don't draw my 1st pick I might draw it. Good luck!!!

10 days early September in Lizard Head Wilderness Area. Each snowy day that passes here in Wisconsin is one day closer to getting back to my mountains

Unless his tail has been cut off!! Southern CO. Rifle hunted Colorado before, but this is first time with stick and string!

Waiting on the Wyoming Draw (General Tag) and put in a "prayer" in the draw on a couple Alaska Elk hunts. Who knows, may get lucky!

we picked "Gen" as our first choice but in the regular draw.

Will put in for rifle elk here in Idaho, if unsuccessful it will be my first archery elk hunt... still undecided on the units, but haven't given it too much thought yet. Either way I'll be planning on at least a week, maybe another long weekend if I can't seal the deal.

Hitting the Continental Divide in southern CO the last week of archery. Backcountry style. Will be quite an experience.

Arizona, if my draw luck changes, September, most likely Idaho, from the 14th till season closes.

Washington archery elk will hopefully be ten days in a remote pack in base camp,then the other 4 days doing a bivy camp up an unexplored canyon

Then two weeks in idaho for the early rifle season

Then at least a week back in wa with the girlfriend for rifle season (hopefully a draw hunt )

I had all the plans laid out to go on my first archery elk hunt, but about a month ago my dad asked if I would go take him on his last elk hunt. Since that day, he and I have been making plans and inviting a few friends to go with us. This is going to be more of a social event than a hunt, but that's ok since this is what he wants. I just hope I can put him on a cow much less a bull. We are going during 2nd rifle season in Colorado. We still have not decided on a GMU yet, so if anyone has any ideas or suggestions on where to go, we are very open at this time.

Muzzle loader 9 day cow hunt in Unit 12,CO. Then either a 9 day bull hunt in the 2nd rifle season or a 5 day cow hunt in the 1st rifle season . It all depends on what left over tags look like for rifle season.
I will also have a ML doe deer tag for eastern CO and a late season doe antelope tag

I think I am going to put down the Muzzleloader, and accept the challenge of getting a Bull with a bow. Colorado.

Also doing a couple of backpacking trips this summer to Wyoming to scout a General Unit that I am hoping to hunt in 2017.

Drew a mule deer muzzy tag and am going to take the bow for some otc elk at the same time. I get 7 days in the wilderness solo with a couple horses to do the heavy work.

Looks like headed from GA to Colorado September 6th. drew ML cow tags unit 711, Plan to drive straight threw and have a couple days to set up camp and look around before the 10th. This will be my second trip and my partner, his first.

Western Wyoming for me. 2 weeks in the middle of September, with an option for a 3rd if really needed... Hopefully I'll have a mule deer tag or a surplus cow tag in my pocket too.

Plans: OTC archery opener, 4-5 days with 79 year-old Dad, wall-tent-style in Eastern WA and 9 days OTC archery, backpack "any elk" in Eagle Cap Wilderness.

Hopes: Draw a bull tag for the Wenaha. A guy can dream, right?!
