Time For A Change

Hunting has gotten harder and harder in the area I hunt. It has really gone down since about the year 2000. I have been scouting other areas and making forays into them. This July I plan on another week long scouting trip to check over an area I have been to in the past, reviewed on G.E. and AcmeMapper2 and on the ODF&W website. I will have my brother and a cousin with me. I am hoping we find something exciting. For me it is time for a change.
Are you other elk hunters staying put, or are you considering a change too?

I am considering one change.For several years, the unit I have hunted unit has been either sex with a cap of 500 tags.This year they changed it to bulls only.The kicker being that about 500head of elk in that unit head fro private ranches now before rifle season begins.Finding any elk is tough, let alone one with horns.

I switch units often. CO is great for that. Scouting and hunting new units is more interesting to me than going back to spots I've already hunted, the prospect of new discoveries is more appealing than repeating a past hunt. "I'm a lover of the other side of the hill." Chuck Pyle, RIP.

Staying put for now. Driving 28 hours or so ,depending on the state I'm hunting ,finding a place to change to is always a challenge. That being said I'm continually on the lookout for that"better" spot.
Part of the beauty of the west I guess, plenty of places to explore

Yes, the groups is going to Colorado to try the old smoke pole. sad to take a year off from Idaho archery but we were tired of the preference points game and going to burn them. but back to Idaho next year. If we get drawn I well enjoy new stomping grounds and the 17 hour drive compared to 19 to Idaho.

Sort of .It is an area we have ATV'ed extensively and was part of the zone we moose hunted in.
Last year I made a big move from the desert to the mountains.

Since the State of Wyoming kicked us in the nards and didn't draw us for licenses, we had no choice but to try somewhere new. MT here we come! Havent had time to research much in the last month or so, but I am feeling the need to do a lot more research.

Good luck in the new areas swede! I made a slight move, I moved about 15 miles to the west from my previous hunting area last year and got into the elk thick with little to no hunting pressure, I've been watching the area with cameras since mid April and have several bulls starting to grow their racks.

What units are you looking into?

I am scouting a General Unit hunt in Wyoming.

In the area I currently hunt, I can only get a Tag every other year, and I decided that is not enough.

The toughest thing about a new area, is that you cannot tell how much hunting pressure it gets without just being there. Hate to just roll the dice, but it may take a couple of tries to hit the jackpot.

Eventually, I would like to get Montana into the rotation. Colorado - Wyoming - Montana. That would make for great variety and keep this fresh all the time. I just hope I can keep hunting long enough to make that happen.
