Axe/Hatchet/Saw

When packing on foot 5-6 miles back 5-7 days at a time what do people use to breakdown and cut firewood for your small pack-able wood-stove you might bring along?

Wyoming saw is a common answer I would think, but seems they have some better updated products to use. Is packing a medium size axe/hatchet the way to go. Or a sturdy and durable folding hand saw? I am planning to go out in july to scout and was thinking about choping all my wood and stashing near by camping spots so its there and ready come sept. that way I would not have to pack in an axe/hathcet/or saw in sept. Or at least not as heavy duty of one of those if I know I have a stacsh of firewood hidden close to camp that SHOULD be there.

wondering the best tool to bring when considering weight and ease of transporting it on your back/on foot for wood chopping for wood stove.

I sure wouldn't pack a hatchet in; you really don't need to split wood for your little stove anyway. The Wyoming Saw is probably the best thing on the market right now for what you're talking about. The Sawvivor Brand was an excellent, lightweight saw but they went out of business a while back (before I could buy one---GRR). I recently picked up a folding SOG Wood/Bone saw (new from SOG this year) that I'll be carrying in my pack this year. It weighs less than the Wyoming Saw and would probably work just fine for the type of wood you'll be cutting for your little titanium tent stove, and hopefully, to use to cap out your bull. Just an option to consider as you search around

I used to carry a Fiskars hatchet but am going to switch to a Wyoming Saw. The hatchet is heavier, saw can be used for more than cutting fire wood and there's the whole safety thing.

Good ole knapp hunting saw, Bone saw on one side and wood saw on the other. it is small and works for my needs. I have a WYO saw but just haven't carried it too much.

5-6 miles is fairly short, but there is still no way in hell i'm packing one in..

i took a great hatchet 10 days in..i think i used it once..no twice if you count the time it sliced my thumb. i just snap the branches..if they are unbreakable..i burn them "strategically"

never seen the Sven saw. After much research that is the one I will go with. the main purpose of this saw if to cut wood. Love the looks of this and gets great reviews

Specifically for wood... a Fiskars saw. They are awesome. I keep one in a leather scabbard on my riding saddle in case there are any trees down on the trail.

I got a silky big boy saw....they are great, light, and easily packable. There are smaller ones that may suit you, but the silky saws are awesome. I also take a wetterlings axe/hatchet/hammer, if horses weren't packing stuff in, i wouldnt take the axe

I keep a folding Fiskars saw in my ATV. Last year it made short work of a 14 ' tree over the ATV trail on mostly a knife ridge, A few minutes cutting or 3 1/2 hour back track.

Depending on the type of wood available you may not need to pack a saw. I don't have a hatchet or ax on most of my Boy Scout outings,. The boys still make "plenty big fires",.. without stitches and blood
Where I use to deer hunt my camp is all ready to ATV in and set up. If your going in before why not cut wood and dont even bring in anything when hunting.
I dont use a fire during hunts, but I have a couple nights wood stashed for an emergency .
