Merino Wool

I have merino wool and love it, have used it mainly for warmth to this point.

Looking to purchase more merino wool tops. Sitka merino wool base layer I figure i can wear as my only top layer on several warm-hot days in a row and it will not stink up. is this accurate? Is there other merino wool out there I should consider using other than sitka for the purpose of using it as my only top layer during warm-hot days and keeping the stink away for a couple days before washing it in the creek.

Take a look at first-lite. Have used it multiple days . I usually will just hang it up on a clothes line when in camp and it seems to not smell after several days use. At least to my nose. Lol

I have good luck with ibex not having a scent issue after multiple days of wearing. Same thing with smartwool.

I use First Lite or Red Ram with no issues.

I have First LIte and Core4 merino and there isn't much comparison between the two. The First Lite is much better quality and noticeably more comfortable.

It's not a top, but one of my favorite pieces of merino gear that I own are the Kuiu zip off bottoms, available in two different weights. If you get cold or hot, you can get them on/off without taking off boots and gaiters. They also don't go all the way to your ankles where they interfere with boots either.

You are accurate! Here's my tops in order of warm to cold weather:

Lightweight stretchy polyester shirt only

Merino wool long sleeve only (most common)

Merino wool under the polyester top

Sitka Jetstream over those 2

Kelvin vest under the Jetstream

With all 4 on I'm good for some pretty chilly weather. Add a hat with earflaps, a fleece neck gaiter, and gloves and I'm good until serious winter sets in.

Core 4 Element is nice. Sitka is nicer for sure. Smoother material and definitely less "itchy" which can be a problem when you put wool against the skin. I've never tried First Lite but I'd like to.

I like Filson lightweight or their med/light weight. Nothing keeps you warm while sweates up like good wool!

I have kuiu lightweight long sleeve t in merino. All I wore most days in September. No stink .
