Do you use a replaceable blade knife?

I have been using the Outdoor Edge knife for a while now, and have been really happy with it. I just finished up a review and posted it to our blog. Let me know what you guys think.

As usual, a very good review Rob, thanks! I picked one of the OE Razor's a month or so ago and like it already. Stronger by a mile, larger, and much easier to change blades. I broke too many blades last year using my older disposable blade knife (working on an elk) and that knife will stay in camp from now on. I'm also gonna order one of the Sharp X sharpeners, looks like a great little tool!

Dont even need to read your review. I bought one of the outdoor edge ones, and soon after gave away my havalons. Theyre great. I like fixed blade knives, but when im trying to disassemble an animal in the cold and dark, sharpening a knife is the last thing i want to screw with.

I take blood thinners and the Havalon scares me to death. I'm afraid I'll break the blade and cut myself badly and bleed for a while. I love it for turkeys but tried it this year on a little doe and found that it took me way too long. I was being very cautious.

I still use fixed blades and not those tiny ones either. Sharp things and me don't get along though. I remember one snowy cold night ,sewing my finger up with a dull horse sized needle and a bottle of Jack Daniels used liberally on the cut and quite bit from the inside. We were about 11 miles back in on a road that was snowed in so we couldn't get out. Two of us killed a bull and two cows early in the morning in about 18" of snow . I cut my finger to the bone while gutting out the third elk. My hands were about numb and I couldn't tell the difference between elk and me I guess.

I use a Havalon and really like it. The original blades would snap easily, but they now make thicker blades which can take a lot more abuse. Like others have said, I don't want to stop and sharpen a knife several times while working on an elk, so the replaceable blades are really nice.

Good review. I recently got that outdoor edge knife for Christmas. It worked great on the one pheasant that I got to use it on. Can't wait to use it on a deer.

I used a Havalon Piranta on two elk this year and was extremely impressed! I did break a blade while cutting through the thick hide on the back of the neck (and kinda expected that since I read about that happening in other reviews). Other than that, it worked like a charm. Pretty sure I'll be sticking with the replaceable blade knives, but may look at a heavier duty Outdoor Edge version.

I have a Havalon, it was a gift. Still prefer a fold up regular knife. I can run it over a small diamond stone as fast as a blade change on a Havalon. Twinkieman tried the Havalon type knives for taxidermy and was not impressed. I'm a lifelong woodworker and know all things sharp and just am not impressed. Just old school I guess. Nothing against those that like them, just my preference.

I'm old school also and I know how to sharpen a good blade. If you have some good steel there will be no need to stop and resharpen it. Give me a GOOD fixed blade knife anytime!

This thread cost me $169.00!! After reading this I started to research knife steel. Why do guys have to stop and resharpen knives. I ended up with a Bradford Guardian 3 with Bohler M390 steel blade. I am going to sharpen this puppy and after skinning out an animal, see if I can still shave hair without resharpening.
