Wood Stove

Looking for recommendations on a wood stove that is able to be packed on your back? I have researched a few but hoping to get some feedback from people who have experience with any of the pack-able wood stoves. Packable meaning able to fit it in your pack or ties to outside of your internal frame pack.Thanks!

I have a couple Kni-co stoves that are pretty light and work well for the money. They don't break down though. The 4 Dog titanium stoves are supposed to be top notch. Kifaru makes wood stoves that break down and lay flat.

I have a Kifaru Medium Box Stove. It puts out crazy heat but it will flame out over night. FWIW, I haven't used it once for archery elk season in CO.

What kind of shelter? I have a Kifaru sawtooth and seek outside titanium stove. I think under 7 lbs total...

The Shelter is a seek outside 4 man tipi. So very similar to yours. Is there a reason you went with the Kifaru and not the seek outside 4 man tipi? Just interested to hear since those are the 2 I am looking at ?

Is that stove the medium size? And it breaks down plenty small enough to pack in on your back, correct? I wish they would have a picture on their site of the medium stove completely broken down and packed as small as it can go.

I never really considered tipis. I guess I liked the ability to have the stove and gear up at the front and sleeping space at the back... I do like the Sawtooth, except if you try to pitch it in tight timber, it can be a pain finding a spot. But that's the case for a lot of larger shelters.

Brings up a good point. Why steel or why titanium is better?

Easy. Titanium is lighter, but more expensive. I would imagine the stainless stoves are a little more durable, but that's probably not an issue if you take care of them.

If I were to run the Kifaru Medium Box Stove (Stainless) for my Sawtooth, weight is listed as 5lb 4 oz. A medium Kifaru Oval stove is ~3 lbs lighter. Good reference to check out Kifaru's stoves (and compare stats) here:

No doubt. I'd have gone titanium if I hadn't gotten this one for a smoking deal. It has to be really freaking cold for me to pack this thing anywhere.

I have had a Ti-goat cylinder stove for years, with a 7ft pipe it weighs something like 1lb 10oz. It has been a great very dependable stove that has proven durable. Packs down to nothing. Phantom16 saw it in action during our ID hunt a few years ago and it really made a difference when we had almost 7 days straight of rain. Dried our gear, kept us warm and was a great TV set.

I highly recommend the Ti-Goat.

Its a little on the heavy side, but it's never an argument on if we are taking it or who will carry it. Even in early season it can be used to take the dampness out.

I bought the stove pipe kit from Ti-goat. I believe its 12" x 7'. Just unroll it turn it 90 degrees and roll it back up. Then place the steel cables around the pipe to hold it in place. It even came with a damper.

Yes sir, the little Ti-goat worked flawlessly and kept us from going insane during many days of high wind and sideways rain. It's amazing how much heat they can put out.

Not gonna lie... $$$.. I'm on a tight budget and it seemed like a good stove for the price. Now that I have it and have burned it in I'm very happy with my decision. I really like the size when it's broken down and fits very well in the pack. The bigger door is great for bigger chunks of wood and the titanium rods make it easy to cook on. If I decide to get a bigger tipi later down the line I'll get the Seekoutside box stove as well. I'm kind of a gear junkie.. I like toys! Lol...

I've had/used a Kifaru small stove for 7 years in a Go-Lite SL4. Stainless steel box and Ti-Goat titanium pipe. I have both the Kifaru damper screens and the Ti-Goat damper, but like the Kifaru screens much better. Total weight of stove, pipe, bag, etc. is about 2.5 lbs. Packs tight for backpacking, which is the only way I use it.
