Arrows

I need to get new arrows and i am probably going to get fmj deep 6 330. I shoot 70# at 27.5" draw. Any pros/cons of these arrows? Any opinions appreciated.

Broadhead selection is not as diverse with deep six shafts. Other than that I can't think of any deal breakers. I like the QAD Exodus deep six.

Never thought of that problem. Doing some quick research, those qad exodus broadheads seem less popular, but higher satisfaction and better recommendations. They will be at the top of my list so far. Which ones do you shoot, full blade or swept blade?

Full. Swept are illegal in Oregon. So are mechanicals.

When I was preparing for my 2015 Montana Archery Wapiti hunt I wanted micro diameter "heavy" arrows. I looked into fmj deep 6's but read all the great reviews that warned of not being able to find boadheads that I wanted to use that were compatible. Never a good idea for a company to go proprietary with all accessories. FWIW I stayed away from them and went with black eagle deep impacts with outserts that opened me up to be able to use the broad head of my choosing. That being said I think you can get outserts from other companies that will work with the Eastons and open you up to any head.

If you are going to use the micro diameter I would stick with a Deep 6 insert. All of the outserts bend and they bend easily. By design, the weakest portion of the outsert is where it meets the shaft. Very hard to keep them spinning true and accuracy with fixed blade heads will suffer. The best option for an outsert is the Firenock Aerooutsert, these have their own set of issues as well.

I tried the Deep 6 FMJ's for a year and a half with a lot of different outserts. None are reliable. Also, by design, the threaded portion of a deep 6 head is also the weakest point. The actual threads are stronger from stripping but the shaft itself is weaker. They are however, better than any outsert.

I haven't heard many complaints with the QAD Exodus heads, they would be a solid choice for these arrows. I don't like being limited in BH choice by insert design.

I went back to the regular FMJ's after my experiment. I didn't see any advantage to the micro diameter shafts.

Well....i went for the deep six arrows today, weighed 454 gr and chronoed at 283 fps. I didnt double check the field tip weight, may be 125. Thanks for the input, i am probably going to go with the qad exodus broadheads, i liked the look of them.

I was visiting with a buddy today about pass throughs. He was shooting 60# with a carbon arrow and rage broadheads....he got a pass through on his elk. How common is that for you guys? With my really old bow at 70# and 6 yds, 8 in of my arrow was sticking out and the bull, he broke the arrow off sticking out of him on his first step outta there.

There's a couple women I know that got pass throughs on Roosevelt shooting 50lbs and less than 400gr arrows. Heads were fixed, since it's Oregon, I can't remember the brand.

I just got my arrows set up with the intention of hunting OTC in Colorado in September. My bow is set at about 65 lbs. and my arrows are Easton FMJ 340s at 27" with 125 grain Trophy Taker Shuttle broadheads. I really like the FMJ arrows. I think my total arrow weight with broadhead is around 425 to 435 grains ("I'll have to weigh them). Sufficient weight?

Arrow weight for an elk will get you a ton opinions. I think a well tuned bow is as much as a factor as the weight of the arrow where penetration is concerned. An arrow that doesn't fly straight won't penetrate as well. I shoot a 550 grain arrow with a cut on contact head. Lots of people kill elk with less weight every year. I witnessed two kills this year both shots were less than 20 yards. Neither got pass thrus. Both were mechanicals with 450ish grain arrows. We heard both elk die less than 100 yards. Neither left a blood trail between the initial spot and their final resting places. Paul (elknut) has a very informative thread on arrow weights and penetration on Archery Talk under the western forum. It's worth the read. Whatever you choose, take the time to actually shoot the combination at all your planned hunting ranges. Regardless of what people say they all don't fly like field points at all distance.
