Mold on my diaphragm call

I keep all my Diaphragm calls in a jerky snuff can in the refrigerator. Well last night I grabbed the calls for a little practice while I was out feeding the horses. One of the calls was covered in little black dots. When I looked closer it was mold. I scrubbed it down with hot water, dish soap and a toothbrush. The dots were still on the call but I'm hoping the mold spores were killed. I placed the call in the window to dry and I'll give it a try tonight. I'm sure it was my fault. I don't remember rinsing it off last fall.

Anyone else have any mold issues?

Yep, I've had that very thing happen when I've put my calls away with any moisture on them for any extended period of time. I use something similar to you for carrying/storing my calls (round plastic container), but, I pack it 3/4 full with round cut paper towels and place my calls on top of the towels and in between layers (I just trace the container shape on some stacked paper towels and cut em with scissors). The paper towels help absorb any moisture on the calls when they go from your mouth to the container. This has worked very well for me for many years; you may want to give it a try (and obviously, dry your calls out and put in fresh paper towels occasionally).

Great idea. I just tried the call and it still works. I will be placing some paper towels in with the calls from now on.
