Free Montana Hunt Plan

So here's the deal.....

As you may know I book hunts for 1 outfitter in Wyoming and 1 in Montana. I owned the Montana outfit for 13 years so I know every nook and cranny of the area.

Indian Summer Outfitters (cool name huh) offers drop camps, semi guided hunts, and of course fully guided. Drop camps are $1950. Semi guided $2950. Guided hunts $3500/$4500 for 2 on 1 or 1 on 1.

If you book a semi guided hunt I will give you, for free, the master hunt plan for the entire area. Like all of my plans it includes a topo map marked with pack trails, game trails, bedding and feeding areas, wallows etc etc. It comes with the usual set of written instructions on how and where to hunt as well. Hunt a spot,,,, if they aren't there (or you bust them out) go hunt another spot and another until you find more elk. There is enough information on there to keep your entire group busy for the week. In the past I have sent only 2 bow hunters to the surrounding area. Both were solo. Both killed bulls and had lots of action.

Licenses are 100% guaranteed as long as you have your application in by March 15th.

Quick reminder that Wyoming apps are due by next Monday February 1st since 1/31 falls on a Sunday.

I already have your plan ready to go Chiquita. I know you'd like to visit your old homeland but I have a couple treestand spots in Wyoming just waiting for you to find the time. They are spots I can barely resist tree stand hunting myself. Easy to get to each day from the truck, major wallows on a game highway, and no grizzlies. The bulls there are so mouthy you'll know when they're coming too. I hope you and MtnMutt can make it some day. Don't forget to buy a point later this year. Tell your packer, I mean hubby, that there's really good fishing close by too.

Is this an area you horse back into or can you pull a trailer and sleep in it? Also is the semi guided 2950 per person? Thanks.

A semi guided hunt takes place at a packed in wall tent camp and yes the price is $2950. All hunting is on foot from camp. You don't ride into camp. Instead you hunt your way in and end up in camp at the end of the day. Guided hunts begin the same way but those guys use horses sometimes during the hunt.

I have half a dozen stands. I figured I' load them on the pack horse and make my rounds. I dream of sitting in those stands. In September it seems like every bull you see is covered in mud. It took me 3 years to find out where they were whooping it up. I would see and hear bulls coming and going from there but just never hit the right elevation to know where the party was. Once I found one of them the rest came easy as they were at the same elevation on a highway that connected them. They are spooky spots.

Side note: I saw 3 mountain lions hanging together on a big rock there once. So you know it must be good hunting right! All that just 1 mile from the truck. I love that area. Who wouldn't when the first time I went there it was gun season and the bulls were bugling their heads off all day. I killed this bull in the first 30 minutes or less of light after moving in on him in the dark and getting in front of him. Make plans now for 2017!

You had me Indian Summer. I'm still learning what to do up in Flathead/Seeley/Swan area and failing. Unfortunately, neither me or my hunting buddy could swing $3k, someday maybe. It sounds like a heck of a deal!

Indian summer, I'm going to try to join you some year. I decided to do a DIY hunt to save money. I have already spent $3,000 stocking up on gear. I may have taken the wrong approach.

Nah, there is nothing wrong with having all of your own gear. Makes going every year a heck of a lot easier!

That's right cohunter. The idea is to hunt on your own. Be self sufficient. You can always start out on an outfitted hunt. It's a great way to learn if you have the right guide. But there's no reason you can jump right into DIY hunting.

My Montana hunt plans cost less than 2 drop camp hunters that's for sure. Plus unlike an outfitted hunt you can keep going back to the area.

Okay, then: Have bow, will travel! I dream of sitting in stands, too. Never thought I'd say that.
And horses? Count me in again! Are you heading there in 2017? I'll start getting familiar with the WY hunt rules. Is this a draw unit, or will I need to build points? I've been a slacker in that respect.

Draw odds have been on the downslide but as of now 2 points will get you a license for $577. You can get one with no points for an arm and a leg which equates to $1057.

My plans in 2017 depend on what happens with the draw this year. My plan A is always hunting elk in Wyoming. If I don't draw this year I'll probably hunt mule deer there and maybe buy a leftover private land cow tag near Buffalo. If I do draw elk this year I'll want to do my deer hunt next year. Mule deer season is September 15 to 30. Prime time for archery elk but if I a hunting deer I won't have an elk tag to tempt me during that hunt. I may fall back on the cow tag though and stop on my way home to fill that.

For now just buy the point some time between July 1 and October 30th. I always post reminders here.

Never know... sometimes I know people who are applying with more points than they need. As long as they have enough to guarantee their license they don't mind applying as a party to help someone else out.
